Reading at Drew
We teach 7 reading skills across each child’s learning journey.
In addition, children are taught the skill of retrieval (lifting facts, quotes and evidence from the text) which is needed to access the strategies above.
Our Reading Spine:
Reading for pleasure is known to have a significant impact on children's attainment and life chances. We have developed a 'reading spine' of key books that we believe will enrich children's experiences, bring enjoyment and nurture a love of reading.
Some of these books will be read in their entirety; others will be studied in extract form. All will be available for children to enjoy.
Class Novels:
All children have the opportunity to experience a range of worlds and cultures through the exposure to noteworthy class novels. The class novels chosen are read to the children for 15 minutes each day.
Must Reads:
We have must reads to expose children to range of fiction and non-fiction texts linking to other areas of our curriculum to support children's deeper thinking and understanding.
