At Drew we teach the majority of our foundation subjects in a blocked format. We block units together so that children spend weeks immersed in a unit and have the time to develop a core bank of knowledge and skills that support in building depth.
Some subjects are taught weekly: Music, Computing, P.E. (Physical Education), Spanish and P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social, Health and Economics).
Music and P.E. are taught by specialist teachers. This model allows for a depth of learning enabled by expert teaching and high expectations for outcomes.
For each foundation subject, ‘Learning Adventure Big Books’ are created to capture the learning across each unit. The big books provide ongoing reflection opportunities both within and across units. They are utilised to ensure subsequent learning builds on the foundation of what came before. We love showcasing our big books during parents' evenings when children have opportunities to share their learning with family members.
You can find some examples below of what to expect to see in our big books:
For each subject, our curriculum maps show how a year group's learning is mapped out per term or half term. We also have knowledge organisers for foundation subjects detailing the key knowledge that children gain from each taught unit including key vocabulary and images. This means you can use the same words and pictures at home when talking to your child about their learning every week.
All of these documents can be found on each subject page to the left and on the icons on the homepage - please explore!
To keep you up-to-date with what your child is learning, we share a Curriculum Newsletter explaining all about the exciting learning planned for the new half term. It's a great chance for families to talk to their children about the new upcoming learning and linked meaningful experiences. You can find these newsletters by clicking on the 'Our Learning' section of our homepage to find your child's year group.
In addition to this, please take some time to click on each individual subject to read what Drew children say about their learning and to see images of their fantastic thinking and hard work.
