1ST GRADE
Students will write self-simile poems and create self-portraits using 3D objects.
What are my character traits, likes, strengths, gifts, talents, and genius type?
Students discovered their genius type (multiple intelligence) after learning about Albert Einstein and gaining vocabulary related to unit content such as passions, gifts, and talents. Students spent several days understanding the rules of a simile and how to say and write one after listening to a variety of stories and playing several games. Next, they reflected on their personal characteristics and used those to write self-similes in a poetic format.

2ND GRADE
Students will explore manufacturing and entrepreneurial skills as they engineer a prototype of an arcade game.
How will I design an arcade game that others will enjoy?
Students have been working hard to design and construct arcade games out of cardboard boxes. The process includes writing the game rules, designing & building with cardboard connection techniques, creating a blueprint of all 3 dimensions for "manufacturing" purposes, and preparing tickets and coins for friends who will come play their games!

Students will research a person on the "Periodic Table of STEM" and prepare a mystery box for the individual chosen.
What can I discover about a famous person in STEM and what clues will I collect for my mystery box?
Students spent several class periods practicing detective work and learning how forensic science can help solve a mystery. Now they will use their acquired skills to create a mystery for someone else to solve. This will involve secretly researching a famous person from a STEM career and creating a box full of clues to who the person might be.

How can I collaborate with peers to design and engineer a single cohesive product by integrating various "systems" of play?
Unit 2 - Entrepreneur Study - Collaboration
Students have been learning how
modern workplaces thrive on teamwork and collective problem-solving. They collaborated to create a new system of play by combining various objects and solving the challenge of moving a ball along a path. Teams identified which robot + LEGO attachments and remote drivers are most successful and efficient in moving the ball. They learned about their own strenghts and weaknesses and how knowing both can be useful when working with a team.

How can my gifts and talents help me change the world?
Unit 2 - Affordable and Clean Energy Study - Innovation
Students completed their study of wind energy and creating windmill or wind turbine protypes. They added some asthetics to their creations so the final product would look fabulous on display in the front foyer. These 5th graders will also be leaving a bit of their legacy at BBE. Check them out in the front of the building.
