Impactful augmented reality use at Highfields Primary School, Manningtree
Highfields Primary School in Manningtree, Essex, is expanding its curriculum technology.
To enhance learning outcomes, recent investments in one-to-one Windows laptops for daily lessons have been augmented by iPads. These tablets allow students and teachers to explore the creative, immersive potential of the Sandbox AR platform alongside video and audio tools.
The case studies below show how Sandbox has been imaginatively used at both Key Stage 1 and 2 age ranges.
Using the Sandbox AR platform, Highfields pupils experienced a virtual dinosaur encounter on their school field via the School CCTV camera footage. The children observed multiple prehistoric creatures, including a hunting T-Rex and several enormous herbivores. They also discovered two Triceratops nests, counting eight large, speckled eggs in total.
At Highfields Primary School, Headteacher Mrs. Marshall thrilled students by recounting a weekend dinosaur "sighting" on the school field. Security alerts led her to discover Triceratops nests and a T-Rex. The children used impressive knowledge of habitats, paleontology, and diets to brainstorm how the extinct creatures arrived.
Highfields Primary School is utilising Sandbox AR technology to immerse students in their history curriculum. By building and exploring virtual ancient Egyptian worlds, children interactively engage with the past—demonstrating an advanced understanding of historical concepts like canopic jars and the role of Anubis.
Highfields' Year 4 pupils utilised iPads and Sandbox AR to design their new outdoor learning space. Moving from paper to 3D virtual prototyping, they collaborated to build life-sized layouts, troubleshoot tech issues, and record architectural decisions. The interactive project significantly boosted the children's problem-solving, digital literacy, and teamwork.
