Whitefield Primary School is located in Liverpool, in area which is becoming increasingly diverse. Their area is ranked as an area of high deprivation and thus they work together for the common good and for the provision of "Nothing But the Best" for every child at Whitefield.
Marie Beale (Deputy Headteacher) and David Shaw (Key Stage 2 teacher) explain how they use of digital technology (and in this case SandboxAR) to enhance teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum.
'We've been using the Sandbox AR Immersive app to enrich our curriculum and further embed the children's learning. We've been using alongside our historical topics ... we've recreated these worlds to allow children to experience the culture and lifestyle of these civilisations.'
David Shaw (Key Stage 2 teacher)
'When we've studied polar regions and polar climate. One of our key texts in English is to do with Ernest Shackleton and his journey on the Endurance ... and then we enabled the children to take the Sandbox AR app and build their own polar region. And the idea behind this was to try to feel the conditions. It is one thing to look at the conditions that Shackleton had to endure but to actually be immersed ... really brought that learning to life!'
David Shaw (Key Stage 2 teacher)
'It has had a significant impact in engagement and has allowed learners to make lots of progress'
David Shaw (Key Stage 2 teacher)
'Don't be frightened! It is one of the most straightforward and easy to use apps that I have ever come across ... The features are really accessible and you'll be up and running with it in no time!'
David Shaw (Key Stage 2 teacher)
'So Now Press Play is a set of headphones which are joined together by one system and anything that is played through those headphones is played by everyone that has the headphones on and by providing one continuous soundtrack, or set of effects. One of the key things when using any kind of technology is the ability to stay immersed within it, particularly when using AR. So the idea of providing an audio cue as well enables learners to remain really focused and switched on to what it is that they're trying to create, because the headphones are able to take away any distractions within the surrounding area.'
