Updates and Weekly "Wanderings" from Principal Martellone
Dear Estabrook Families,
I hope this communication finds you doing well and that everyone had a smooth transition back to school after the February break.
I was out of the district through Wednesday this week and Thursday/Friday were busy with a bit of catching up, so you won't have any of my "wandering" notes this week.
On Monday I will be sending out a communication related to the upcoming changes in COVID-19 protocols. As a "preview", I'll just note that it will be more important than ever, that we really embrace our district core value of "We All Belong" and make sure that we're respectful of different needs, opinions and choices as we move beyond some of the COVID-19 protocols we've lived with for about two years now. Please be on the look out on Monday for my letter. I'll be sharing a similar communication with staff that will have more logistical details for implementing at the school level.
It seems hard to believe that we're already in March and that Spring's arrival is just around the corner. We also have our upcoming time change on March 13th where we "spring ahead".
I appreciate your continued support both at school and home with the work that we do collaboratively. I continue to enjoy my time with your children and the wonderful staff at Estabrook.
Best,
Mr. Martellone
Fifth Grade Announcers!
Starting on March 14th, we're going to have morning announcements each day, read by our very own Fifth Grade Students! We recently reestablished a school leadership team with a variety of adults serving on that team and in our first meeting, I proposed that we have morning announcements done by fifth graders. We're going to have students read announcements each day between 8:55-9:00. Students will provide the school some short announcements about school happenings, read the Pledge of Allegiance, recognize birthdays and remind students about being great Estabees! Be sure to ask your fifth grader if they've had a chance to read!
Student COVID-19 At Home Antigen Testing Reminder
We will continue to send home testing kits every other week for those families that have signed up for them. Please be sure to check your child's back pack to make sure they got home!
The district has provided this form for families to use to report a POSITIVE students at home antigen test. You only need to report positive tests. It is preferable that you report the positive test by 9:00 AM on Tuesday mornings, so the nurses will check the form after that 9:00 AM deadline. This is only to report POSITIVE at home tests via the LPS At Home Testing Program; if your child tests positive at any other time during the week, please call the school nurses.
If you have not already opted in, this is the form to use to opt in to the at home antigen test program.
Dismissal Changes (upcoming)
Since arriving at Estabrook, I've been watching our end of day dismissal to try and figure out how I can make it better for students and staff. We're looking at making some logistical changes within the school that we think may result in a smoother process for students and alleviate as heavy a duty schedule for staff each week. Outside of not seeing a ton of students out front, we don't think you will notice much of a change. We will let you know prior to starting anything new, in the event that there are some minor snags we encounter as we test things out. I've shared the ideas with the school leadership team and we collectively think the plan will work better. Car pick up and bus dismissal will both still look the same. It will be very important that families have their sheet with student information in the car window/dash for pick up. We'll be sure to announce any changes as we try them out so you are kept in the communication loop!
Lexington 5th graders! Do you love puzzling over and solving fun math problems? Join Adi Koul for an hour of fun and engaging after-school math! Adi is a Lexington High School junior who loves math! His love of math started from a young age, and was nurtured during his time as a student at Bridge School. He has two sisters who are currently in fifth and sixth grade, and he enjoys teaching them new things. As a way to give back to the community and to grow student love of math, Adi has created this amazing opportunity for 5th graders. Sessions will focus on working together on interesting and engaging math problems, learning new math ideas and problem solving strategies, and creating a community of lovers of math!
The program will meet weekly for 5 sessions on Thursdays from 4:15-5:00 all remote. The Zoom links will be shared once registration is complete.

Family Math Night is Back!
We're running two math nights this year where students and parents team up to tackle age-appropriate puzzles, games, and construction activities. The goal is to stimulate a child’s interest in math, to build a repertoire of problem solving strategies, and to have fun! Everything will be set up and ready to go, all you need to bring is your kid.

Kindergarten and 1st graders and parent: Monday March 14 6:30 - 7:45

Chipotle Fundraiser
On March 15, take the night off from cooking and get your guac on with tacos, burritos and quesadillas from Chipotle at 301 Great Road, Bedford! Chipotle will donate 33% of all orders from 5-9pm to the Estabrook PTO. Orders can be placed in-person by showing the fundraising flyer or mentioning the promotion to the cashier prior to paying. Orders may also be placed online for pick up using the code 2AZZYZZ. Please note that online orders must be placed between 5-9pm in order to qualify for the fundraiser.
Spring PTO Events are BACK and In-Person!
We are looking for volunteers for the following events:
Post-Race Party for Run of the Mill on Sunday, May 22 (4 volunteers needed)
Following the Run of the Mill race, runners, families and other members of our Estabrook and Lexington communities come together for a big party with food, music and activities! Our Sponsorship team is already hard at work securing food donations for the party. Volunteer chairs will be needed to pick up donated items ahead of the race and the day of, to coordinate fun activities for the party, and arrange for set up and clean up. These positions are best suited for individuals not planning to run in the race.
End of Year Playground Celebration on Friday, June 17
Another easy one to plan! Make arrangements for the ice cream truck to come sell treats, coordinate music, and enjoy the night celebrating a great school year and the start of summer! You will have the help of the PTO VP for Communications for advertising. Minimal set up and clean up needed.
If you are interested in helping with any of these events, please reach out to info@estabrookpto.org right away! Without the support of volunteers, we will not be able to offer all of these events to the community.
Let’s work together so we can get together to have some fun this spring!
Save the Date!
Estabrook’s PTO, in partnership with Fiske’s PTO and Project Giving Kids, will be hosting a service event to benefit Rosie’s Place on Sunday, April 3rd!
We are partnering with Project Giving Kids because they envision a more compassionate world, and they believe that encouraging and making it easier for kids, teens, and families to engage in volunteer service builds empathy, compassion, communication, and teamwork!
Most of you will be familiar with Rosie's Place as it was the first women's shelter in the United States and their mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.
Our two PTO’s will be collecting supplies leading up to this event and we hope you’ll be encouraged to participate in both donating toiletries for women in need and being a part of the project in-person on 4/3.
More details to follow next week!
