Updates and Weekly "Wanderings" from Principal Martellone
Dear Estabrook Families,
Happy Sunday! This week was a fun one, with my getting into a handful of classes and also attending the K-1 PTO family math night! There were lot of families at math night, all busily involved in solving a variety of math problems posed to them. I enjoyed watching both parents and students help one another solve problems.
During my "wanderings" in classrooms I was able to see student poets, students solving math problems, and students using technology writing and learning parts of speech. The consistent theme across classrooms was the high level of student engagement I saw as I visited rooms!
We had quite a good sized turn out on Wednesday night at our parent presentation about the Serious Talks lessons teachers have been teaching in grades one and five. We appreciate parents and families taking time out of their schedules to attend!
I got word that I omitted to link our Estabee behavior chart in the section I included in the news last week. My apologies....I'm leaving that section in again this week and I added the link!
Parent-Teacher conferences begin this coming week. If you have not signed up for a time with your child's teacher, please make sure you do so. We place a high value on parent and teacher communication, especial about student performance in school, so we want you to meet with your child's teacher.
I hope you have a great weekend and as always, thank you for your support!
Best,
Mr. Martellone
Afternoon Dismissal
Don't forget, we're changing our internal dismissal procedures at Estabrook starting on Monday. As noted in a separate communication, the car line may be a bit slower for a couple of days as we learn new routines. For parents that pick up students by foot at the patio, you will now pick them up on the hardtop area near the basketball hoop to the left (the one with the two orange cones). A staff member will swing through and get your child's name to call them for dismissal. See picture to the left.
School Wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support)
Many parents may have heard their child talk about getting Estabee Cards and being recognized for following school expectations. We're currently looking at ways we can provide some incentives for students to receive the cards (lunch with the principal, preferred assemly seating, small tokens of appreciation, etc.) All of those things are part of our School Wide PBIS system.
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. It is a program designed to teach Safe, Responsible, Respectful and Kind behaviors at school. At Estabrook, part of our job is to encourage students to continuously make good behavior choices through this program.
PBIS provides teachers and other school staff with information to help prevent behavior problems and make school a safe learning environment.
Research shows that the use of PBIS in school has resulted in increased time for instruction. It also increases positive behaviors school wide, and decreases disruptive behaviors.
How Does It Work?
A PBIS school teaches the expectations to all students and provides frequent opportunity to practice. A PBIS school provides a consistent, predictable, and fair use of consequences for all students. At Estabrook we teach students what Safe, Responsible, Respectful and Kind behaviors look like in all school settings through our school’s PBIS matrix.
When we see students meeting those expectations, we give them Estabee Cards as a form of positive recognition, which also gives them a chance to participate in school wide incentives mentioned at the beginning of this overview.
What Families Can Do
Read and discuss the Behavior Expectations Matrix found HERE.
Ask your child if they’ve earned any Estabee Cards and ask them why they earned them.
Review the Behavior Expectation Matrix with your child if he or she experiences behavior problems in school
Work on a plan to help them with strategies for appropriate behaviors
Support teacher and administrative behavior decisions
Discuss problems privately with staff
Student COVID-19 At Home Antigen Testing Reminder
We will be sending home antigen testing kits for students this coming week. We'll let you know when they go home so you can look in backpacks!
The district has provided this form for families to use to report a POSITIVE students at home antigen test. You only need to report positive tests. It is preferable that you report the positive test by 9:00 AM on Tuesday mornings, so the nurses will check the form after that 9:00 AM deadline. This is only to report POSITIVE at home tests via the LPS At Home Testing Program; if your child tests positive at any other time during the week, please call the school nurses.
If you have not already opted in, this is the form to use to opt in to the at home antigen test program.
Estabrook Principal Search Update 3/18/2022
This week the principal candidate for Estabrook came to visit the school for half a day. Gerardo Martinez met with staff, toured the school, visited some classrooms, met with parents and also met with building administrators. It was a very quick visit and great to have him see the school and start meeting the school community.
The district recognizes that the notice was short for the parent meeting, however, they will be offering another time in the evening with Mr. Martinez so that those parents who were not able to attend will have another chance. We'll be sure to communicate that out with plenty of advanced notice.
Family Math Night Thank You!
A huge thank you to all of the families that took time out of their busy schedules to come to the Estabrook PTO sponsored family math night. It was great seeing so many families and students attending.
Additionally, a HUGE thank you to Liz Bettencourt and her helpers for getting everything coordinated and set up for families. We appreciate everyone's contribution in making this a great night for students and families to do math together!
