Updates and Weekly "Wanderings" from Principal Martellone
Dear Estabrook Families,
Happy Weekend! This week felt a lot more like what I know to be a "normal school week" with a return of students to the cafeteria, mask mandates lifted, and upcoming PTO events. Spring is a busy time in schools and in my experience, the pace picks up for everyone after the February break.
This week, I got to have lunch with a student whose family attended the Principal Chat I held (the PTO did a drawing for families that attended) and I have to say, that lunch was one of my bright spots this week. It is always great to get to know students, spend time with them, and make sure we stay grounded on the work we're here for, which is student learning.
As social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions get eased, we are looking to find ways to return to pre-pandemic conditions in regards to school based activities involving students. Those activities are generally the life of the school and they have been sorely missed due to our changed practices.
You will see a short piece below on Estabee cards and you'll also see a short update on the Estabrook principal search provided by our Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Staff Support.
Thank you for your continued support at Estabrook. While my days are certainly busy, I've enjoyed being back in a school and seeing what is happening with students!
Best,
Mr. Martellone
School Wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support)
Many parents may have heard their child talk about getting Estabee Cards and being recognized for following school expectations. We're currently looking at ways we can provide some incentives for students to receive the cards (lunch with the principal, preferred assemly seating, small tokens of appreciation, etc.) All of those things are part of our School Wide PBIS system.
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. It is a program designed to teach Safe, Responsible, Respectful and Kind behaviors at school. At Estabrook, part of our job is to encourage students to continuously make good behavior choices through this program.
PBIS provides teachers and other school staff with information to help prevent behavior problems and make school a safe learning environment.
Research shows that the use of PBIS in school has resulted in increased time for instruction. It also increases positive behaviors school wide, and decreases disruptive behaviors.
How Does It Work?
A PBIS school teaches the expectations to all students and provides frequent opportunity to practice. A PBIS school provides a consistent, predictable, and fair use of consequences for all students. At Estabrook we teach students what Safe, Responsible, Respectful and Kind behaviors look like in all school settings through our school’s PBIS matrix.
When we see students meeting those expectations, we give them Estabee Cards as a form of positive recognition, which also gives them a chance to participate in school wide incentives mentioned at the beginning of this overview.
What Families Can Do
Read and discuss the Behavior Expectations Matrix found HERE.
Ask your child if they’ve earned any Estabee Cards and ask them why they earned them.
Review the Behavior Expectation Matrix with your child if he or she experiences behavior problems in school
Work on a plan to help them with strategies for appropriate behaviors
Support teacher and administrative behavior decisions
Discuss problems privately with staff
Student COVID-19 At Home Antigen Testing Reminder
We sent home student COVID antigen testing kits on Thursday. Please be sure to check your child's back pack to make sure they got home!
The district has provided this form for families to use to report a POSITIVE students at home antigen test. You only need to report positive tests. It is preferable that you report the positive test by 9:00 AM on Tuesday mornings, so the nurses will check the form after that 9:00 AM deadline. This is only to report POSITIVE at home tests via the LPS At Home Testing Program; if your child tests positive at any other time during the week, please call the school nurses.
If you have not already opted in, this is the form to use to opt in to the at home antigen test program.
Estabrook Principal Search Update
From the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Staff Support:
A quick update on our search. We concluded our initial interviews on Friday, March 3. The interview team then summarized our thoughts on each candidate and that information went to Dr. Hackett for her review. She will determine who she would like to bring back for a second interview with her. Once that happens, other updates will follow.
My sincerest thank you to the interview team. They were dedicated, took their charge extremely seriously, and were a complete joy to work with.
Things remain confidential at this point, but we look forward to sharing next steps with candidates soon.

Family Math Night is Back!
We're running two math nights this year where students and parents team up to tackle age-appropriate puzzles, games, and construction activities. The goal is to stimulate a child’s interest in math, to build a repertoire of problem solving strategies, and to have fun! Everything will be set up and ready to go, all you need to bring is your kid.
Where: Estabrook Cafeteria
Kindergarten and 1st graders and parent: Monday March 14 6:30 - 7:45

Spring PTO Events are BACK and In-Person!
We are looking for volunteers for the following events:
Post-Race Party for Run of the Mill on Sunday, May 22 (4 volunteers needed)
Following the Run of the Mill race, runners, families and other members of our Estabrook and Lexington communities come together for a big party with food, music and activities! Our Sponsorship team is already hard at work securing food donations for the party. Volunteer chairs will be needed to pick up donated items ahead of the race and the day of, to coordinate fun activities for the party, and arrange for set up and clean up. These positions are best suited for individuals not planning to run in the race.
End of Year Playground Celebration on Friday, June 17
Another easy one to plan! Make arrangements for the ice cream truck to come sell treats, coordinate music, and enjoy the night celebrating a great school year and the start of summer! You will have the help of the PTO VP for Communications for advertising. Minimal set up and clean up needed.
If you are interested in helping with any of these events, please reach out to info@estabrookpto.org right away! Without the support of volunteers, we will not be able to offer all of these events to the community.
Let’s work together so we can get together to have some fun this spring!
Rosie’s Place Community Service Event
We are excited to be partnering with the Fiske PTO and Project Giving Kids to host a toiletry and used book drive to benefit the women at Rosie's Place in Boston. We hope to assemble 200 toiletry kits for the women who seek support from Rosie's Place at our community service event on April 3.
