Updates and Weekly "Wanderings" from Principal Martellone
Dear Estabrook Families,
I hope this communication finds you doing well as we finish our week and start February break.
This week, Estabrook has been "Buzzing" with kindness activities! Students have shared notes and cards with friends, written songs, and engaged in acts of kindness all around the school. I'll say, considering that we're still amidst a pandemic, it has felt like a bit of a return to normalcy, fun and joy, with just a few twists!
In my "wanderings" this week, I was invited to a first grade music class where students actually wrote a song about Kindness...Here is the link to the song: Kindness Song Great job Ms. Quebec's class...that was one of the best student written songs I've heard! I was able to see Kindergarten students learning their O sounds, students previewing book titles, and fourth grade students working on verse in stories. I also saw a number of students using technology to do a variety of literacy based tasks, which was great, seeing that I'm also the technology director! :-)
Yesterday morning I had fun greeting students as they came in at arrival with some music (Kindness song, by Harry Styles) and I was pretty tired afterwards due to the fact that I had done a number of dance moves I hadn't done in a while! :-) I was also able to encourage a number of students to show me some of their dance moves on the way in and that was fun as well!
We had classrooms decorate the bulletin boards in front of their classrooms and around the school for kindness week. Check out some of the great work below in the photo carousel.
If you're travelling for the break, we wish you safe travels. If you're staying locally, we hope you get a chance to rest and unwind as we head into March!
Best,
Mr. Martellone
Fourth and Fifth Grade Strings Concert
Our fourth and fifth grade students recently held their winter strings concert. With COVID-19 precautions in place, the concert was recorded. If you did not have a chance to see the concert, you can view it HERE. As always, we're grateful for the parental support with students practicing instruments, and as a principal, I am particularly appreciative of our music teachers that instruct our strings participants. I hope that you enjoy the concert!
Student COVID-19 At Home Antigen Testing Reminder
We sent testing kits home with students yesterday (2/17/2022). Please be sure to check your child's back pack to make sure they got home!
The district has provided this form for families to use to report a POSITIVE students at home antigen test. You only need to report positive tests. It is preferable that you report the positive test by 9:00 AM on Tuesday mornings, so the nurses will check the form after that 9:00 AM deadline. This is only to report POSITIVE at home tests via the LPS At Home Testing Program; if your child tests positive at any other time during the week, please call the school nurses.
If you have not already opted in, this is the form to use to opt in to the at home antigen test program.
Parking Restrictions - Arrival and Dismissal
In recent weeks, we have observed many families entering our parking lot during Arrival drop off. We understand that this seems convenient, however, there are many days where not all of our staff can find parking. All parents must use the traffic loop to pick up or drop off students, unless there is a scheduled appointment with a staff member or there is a documented health or medical reason. Please take note that any parent who is observed to be entering our parking lot without an approved reason will be asked to exit the parking lot and re-enter the traffic loop to drop off their child.
Absence Form
If your child will be absent for any reason, please complete the Estabrook Absence Form in addition to contacting the school nurse or office. If your child will be absent for a number of days in a row, it’s only necessary to complete the form once. It’s very important that we receive this information for our records. Thanks for your cooperation.
Attention Inventors, Tinkerers and All-Around Creative Kids!
The Estabrook Maker Space Club is back! For those new to Estabrook, Maker Space is an open-ended creative space where kids get to make all kinds of creations, tinker with tools and recycled objects and even deconstruct old electronics to learn how they work. There is no structured lesson or project plan - they simply have access to a wide range of materials and then they're free to create!
The series will consist of 4 sessions on the following days:
Friday, March 18, 8:00-8:45 AM
Friday, March 25, 8:00-8:45 AM
April 1, 8:00-8:45 AM
April 8, 8:00-8:45 AM
Where: Mr. Taggart’s Class – Room 305
For safety and supervision reasons, participation will be limited to 12 students and is open to all grades. If past interest is any indication, it is quite possible that more than 12 students will sign up. If you are interested in having your child participate in this free activity AND are able to get them to school for 8AM each of the 4 Fridays in the series, Please sign up here before 8PM on February 17.
On February 18, 12 names will be randomly drawn from those who are interested. The families of all whose names are drawn will receive an email on February 18 confirming their selection. Your child is NOT confirmed until you receive a confirmation email from Mr. Taggart. If you participated in the first series, please DO NOT sign up again so that more students will have the opportunity to participate.
We still eagerly welcome donations for the Maker Space! If you have any materials to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. It could be old arts and crafts supplies, office supplies from a business that is closing, clean items from recycling bins, just about anything safe! Here is a PARTIAL list of some things we have received in the past. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mr. Taggart.
Lexington 5th graders! Do you love puzzling over and solving fun math problems? Join Adi Koul for an hour of fun and engaging after-school math! Adi is a Lexington High School junior who loves math! His love of math started from a young age, and was nurtured during his time as a student at Bridge School. He has two sisters who are currently in fifth and sixth grade, and he enjoys teaching them new things. As a way to give back to the community and to grow student love of math, Adi has created this amazing opportunity for 5th graders. Sessions will focus on working together on interesting and engaging math problems, learning new math ideas and problem solving strategies, and creating a community of lovers of math!
The program will meet weekly for 5 sessions on Thursdays from 4:15-5:00 all remote. The Zoom links will be shared once registration is complete.

Post-Race Party for Run of the Mill on Sunday, May 22 (4 volunteers needed)
Following the Run of the Mill race, runners, families and other members of our Estabrook and Lexington communities come together for a big party with food, music and activities! Our Sponsorship team is already hard at work securing food donations for the party. Volunteer chairs will be needed to pick up donated items ahead of the race and the day of, to coordinate fun activities for the party, and arrange for set up and clean up. These positions are best suited for individuals not planning to run in the race.
Spring PTO Events are BACK and In-Person!
We are looking for volunteers for the following events:
Movie Night on Friday, March 25
A super easy event to plan for our school! The Movie Night chair will help select an appropriate movie to show and will arrange for a single event license by making a phone call (so simple!). All of the other equipment to host Movie Night is at Estabrook, and you will have the help of the PTO VP for Communications for advertising.
End of Year Playground Celebration on Friday, June 17
Another easy one to plan! Make arrangements for the ice cream truck to come sell treats, coordinate music, and enjoy the night celebrating a great school year and the start of summer! You will have the help of the PTO VP for Communications for advertising. Minimal set up and clean up needed.
If you are interested in helping with any of these events, please reach out to info@estabrookpto.org right away! Without the support of volunteers, we will not be able to offer all of these events to the community.
Let’s work together so we can get together to have some fun this spring!
