Year 5 have enjoyed another fun-packed couple of weeks. In English, we sharpened our writing skills by crafting compelling character comparisons for the thrilling novel, The Explorer. We firstly used role play to get into our character's heads, then our budding authors wove their own unique perspectives and insightful observations into their comparisons, showcasing their growing understanding of literary devices. History transported us back to Ancient Greece, where we uncovered the fascinating myths and legends of the Greek Gods. We learned about powerful deities like Zeus, mischievous tricksters like Hermes, and the captivating stories of their heroic deeds. Our scientific journeys took us beyond Earth, exploring the wonders of our solar system. We learned about the unique characteristics of each planet, from the fiery surface of Mercury to the icy rings of Saturn. Following this, we looked at the distance between the planets, starting at the sun. In groups, we attempted to map out the distances as steps on the field (using a scaled down version) so we could visualise how far apart they are. Mathematics challenged us with the intriguing world of fractions. We confidently tackled a range of problems, mastering equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and even applying our knowledge to solve real-world scenarios.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:
Maths - Fractions - Adding and subtracting fractions
Writing - The Explorer - Writing an informal letter
Geography - 'What did the Greeks ever do for us?' - How was Ancient Greece governed?
Science - Earth and space - The moon.
