Welcome to 7th grade! My name is Ms. Hughes and I am so excited to be your teacher this year! This will be my 4th year sharing my love for living things and helping young scholars become budding scientists. I graduated from Lee County High School and went on to study biology at Kennesaw State University. I was able to study abroad in Belize studying marine ecology and coral reef systems. I also volunteered at an animal rehabilitation center in Atlanta where I was able to educate the public on the many different native wildlife species found in Georgia and how to protect them. I then decided to pursue my Master's in Teaching at Columbus State University. I am certified to teach Biological sciences 6-12 grade and middle grades social sciences.
As soon as students enter the door of my classroom they become engineers. I believe that the best way to learn science is to explore, ask questions, and create. The STEM program encompasses all of these things. In my class, students do a lot of hands on activities, exploration, and discovery. We work in groups almost every day in order to solve problems, and to help students learn how to work together as a team. I have high expectations for each of them, and I always expect them to work hard every day. We also do a lot of presentations as well, so students can practice communicating their results.
The engineering design process is the heartbeat of the STEM program. We incorporate the engineering design process into everything we do.
We are always looking for ways science connects to math, ELA, and social studies. STEM students will be making these connections throughout the year in their STEM journal.
