Welcome to 7th Grade Accelerated/STEM Math! My name is Mrs. Newsome. I was born and raised in Leesburg, Georgia and I graduated from Lee County High School. After that I attended Georgia Southwestern State University where I earned my B.S. in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Mathematics and English Language Arts. I also have Masters in Instructional Technology from the University of West Georgia and a Specialist in Middle Grades Education from Georgia Southwestern State University. This is my 5th year teaching 7th Grade Math/Accelerated Math at Lee County Middle School East.
7th Grade Accelerated Math is a challenging course. Over the course of the school year we will cover half of the 7th Grade Math standards and all of the 8th Grade Math standards. This will prepare you for the high school math course you will take in 8th grade. Collaboration, data analysis, technology use, and problem-solving are some of the skills we use in our day-to-day Accelerated Math/STEM class. We also keep math journals which house notes and example problems from class. If you ever miss a day of school you can always find my notes on Google Classroom. I look forward to our school year together!
Khan Academy - Khan Academy has videos and practice questions on every standard we cover. You can create your own student account and keep track of your progress or you can just search the videos and watch without an account. The easiest way to get started is to go to courses at the top of the page and find the section labeled "Math By Grade." You can click on 7th grade or 8th grade to view practice videos and practice questions.
IXL - All students have an IXL account. After students take a diagnostic test, recommended math skills are generated based on the diagnostic results. Students can then practice skills in order to show growth over the year. Students should update the diagnostic every 10 days in order for IXL to generate updated recommended skills.
Georgia Standards of Excellence - Here are the standards that we will cover this year (7th Grade Math & 8th Grade Math).
7th Grade Math Study/Resource Guide - Here is a guide that covers all things parents and students need to know about the Georgia Milestones. In addition, there are practice questions and explanations for both Math and ELA.
Google Classroom - Don't forget to check Google Classroom for notes and resources on what's being covered in class.
