Welcome to the STEM Program and to 6th grade Earth Science! My name is Mr. Shane Williams, and I am excited for a year full of learning. This is my twelfth year teaching, and my fifth year at Lee County Middle School East. I earned my B.S. in Middle Grades Education from Georgia Southwestern University. I am certified to teach science in grades 4-8, math grades 4-8, and social studies in grades 4-8 as well as being endorsed in gifted education. I was a the 2017-2018 district finalist for Teacher of the Year for the Dougherty County School System, and was listed and one of Southwest Georgia's 40 under 40 in 2017.
STEM is what we do every day in my class. Students lead the exploration and learning, and I facilitate while guiding them in the right direction. In my classroom we explore earth science content through a variety of learning strategies. Labs, webquests, projects, group assignments, technology-based activities, and oral presentations are some of the experiences that STEM students will encounter. We learn to problem solve and communicate while discovering all aspects of planet Earth. My expectations for STEM Students are set very high throughout the learning process. I look forward to challenging my students and watching them become better learners and leaders.
Please email me at any time with questions and/or concerns at willamssha@lee.k12.ga.us .
This course is intended to teach students the earth science concepts set forth by the Georgia Standards of Excellence (georgiastandards.org). Our instruction will be hands-on, student-centered, technology-rich, interactive, STEM-focused, and inquiry-based. In earth science we will focus on five themes: astronomy, hydrology, meteorology, geology, and human impact. Students will participate in project-based learning related to each theme.
Project Based Learning (PBL) is where students work in teams to find a problem and develop a solution. We work through these experiences by following the engineering design process. Students are challenged throughout PBL to seek solutions and relate the earth science content to realistic situations and experiences. All subjects relate to science content in PBL so that students can apply what they learn in science to their other classes, including STEM Ag. Science. Students also participate in extended learning opportunities (ELOs) during PBL where they meet and talk to experts in different careers that relate to STEM.
Hydrology PBL: Hatchet/ Can You Survive
Geology PBL: Slip Sliding Away
