Program

North Hollywood High School Zoo Magnet inspires and develops our students’ interests in biological and zoological sciences by providing relevant, hands-on instruction to extend learning beyond the classroom. The Zoo Magnet is recognized by the American Association of Zookeepers as one of only six high schools in the nation partnered with a working zoo. Our close proximity and ongoing collaboration with the Los Angeles Zoo, Autry Museum of the American West, and Griffith Park Rangers facilitates the implementation of unique internships, animal science courses, and interdisciplinary, magnet-themed curriculum.

Our curriculum, dedicated staff and hard working students have helped us reach a 100% graduation rate.

The Zoo Magnet has earned multiple awards from Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. In 2023, we earned the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Magnet School of Merit Award of Excellence, the top award for all magnet programs in the nation, for our commitment to high academic standards, school diversity, specialized curricula and instruction, family engagement, and community partnerships. Previously we have been recognized as a Magnet School of Excellence 2022, and Magnet School of Distinction in 2020 and 2019.

We have also been recognized by LAUSD as an Excelling Magnet for 2018-2021 based on SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment exam) results, attendance and the number of Honors and AP Courses offered.

Mission

The Zoo Magnet provides unique opportunities for our diverse student population to engage in hands-on and real-world experiential learning in biological/zoological sciences. We foster a culture of respect and work to build strong character in our campus community. After their time at the Zoo Magnet, our students graduate academically and socially prepared for life after high school to be productive members of the community.

Vision

The North Hollywood Zoo Magnet will inspire academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, respect for diversity, and active citizenship. Our students will become agents of change who will think critically and with empathy about science, policy, people, and the environment.
