What an exciting term we’ve had in Year Five! Our learning journey has been out of this world, quite literally, as we explored space, science, art, and technology in a variety of engaging and creative ways.
We began the term with a provocation on space, sparking the children’s curiosity. They made planets, which we lit up and displayed in our classroom, creating a mini solar system. We also explored the inspiring work of Tim Peake, learning about life as an astronaut.
In the following week, we turned our attention to structures like Stonehenge and investigated how ancient monuments were used as astronomical clocks. We took a scientific approach by creating our own sundials and exploring how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night.
Week three was all about the moon’s movement relative to the Earth. The children demonstrated their understanding through Canva videos, creatively explaining the lunar cycle. This week also marked the start of our art journey. We explored the work of Peter Thorpe, a space artist, and practiced acrylic painting techniques to recreate some of his dynamic artwork.
In week four, the children wrote biographies of Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space. They were inspired by her achievements and determination, and produced some excellent writing showcasing her remarkable journey.
Week five saw the start of an exciting digital project: the children began building their own websites using Google Sites! They enjoyed taking photos of their work, recording videos, and adding voice notes to share their learning with family and friends at home.
Finally, in week six, the children began writing a narrative linked to our class story, all about Jamie Drake and his dad plummeting back to Earth from space. They explored the journey through the Earth’s atmosphere, combining science with storytelling in a thrilling way.
It has been a truly inspiring term, and we are so proud of all the creativity, curiosity, and hard work the children have shown.
