This term, Year 4’s central inquiry has been focused on The Roman Legacy: How past events shaped our lives today. We have been exploring the profound impact the Romans had, and continue to have, on modern life, travelling back to ancient times to understand what they left behind.
The children have truly been Inquirers this term, investigating the structure of the Roman army and what life was like as a soldier. They embraced their inner Roman army officers, learning about formations and military might. This allowed them to understand the level of organisation and strategy required to build and maintain the Roman Empire, boosting their own self-management skills.
We then shifted focus, transforming into budding Historians and Curators. The children had the exciting opportunity to examine Roman artefacts and, like true Thinkers, formulated hypotheses about their use and significance, piecing together fragments of the past to build a bigger picture of Roman life.
In Geography, the children developed a clear understanding of Britain before and after the Roman invasion. They studied the changes in settlements, infrastructure, and landscape, making them more knowledgeable about their own local history and how geography played a role in the Roman conquest.
A massive highlight was the children’s success in Design Technology (DT), where they became Master Builders. Taking inspiration from Roman engineering, they designed and constructed their own strong and reinforced Hadrian's Walls. This required careful planning, problem-solving, and a lot of risk-taking as they tested different materials and designs for strength and durability. They were hugely successful and should be very proud of their resilient structures!
In Art, we continued to explore Roman cultural contributions as the children became Mosaic Artisans. They learned the intricate process of creating stunning mosaics, focusing on geometric patterns and colour, leading to a wonderful display of their artistic skills.
The term culminated with the children putting on their individual class Christmas performances. This truly showcased their brilliance as Risk-takers and Communicators as they learnt lines, songs, and performed for their peers and teachers. Well done to all of Year 4 for their commitment and festive spirit!
As a final act of learning, the children presented their Roman knowledge in a creative format to share with the rest of the school, demonstrating how knowledgeable they have become about this pivotal period in history.
We have been incredibly impressed with Year 4’s enthusiasm, hard work, and their ability to connect the past to the present throughout this inquiry.
