With our author of the term being ‘Julia Donaldson’, the Little Birds have enjoyed sharing her stories, learning all about the animals in them and the environments that they live in through our new transdisciplinary theme of ‘How the World Works’ with the central idea of ‘How living things grow and change’.
They began with ‘Monkey Puzzle’, thinking about the similarities and differences between baby animals and their parents. They explored sorting the animals into families, thought about the environments they live in such as on land, in water or in trees and were fascinated by the animals' different patterns that they painted representations of their favourite jungle creatures.
The children enjoyed learning about farms and the animals that live there through the book of ‘What the Ladybird Heard’. The story has become a Little Birds favourite, with the children enjoying retelling it with puppets over and over again!Once more, the children thought about the best place for the farm animals to live and helped to create their own habitats for their chosen farm animals using different materials.
Alongside the farm environment, Little Birds read a funny story called ‘Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type’. This sparked all sorts of interests around letters, making words and writing our own names. We explored printing our names and writing them at the end of letters.
Continuing on with our Julia Donaldson theme, Little Birds shared the all time favourite story of ‘The Gruffalo’. They enjoyed the familiarity of the story, retelling the story with puppets, learning the song that goes with it and representing the Gruffalo with materials such as play dough. They also enjoyed learning about the woodland environment and the creatures that live there.
The Little Birds are looking forward to Easter and the nursery team hope they will be egg-cited for a special surprise on their return after the break! Tweet Tweet!
