Year 5

Year 5's Central idea was 'Migration Affects Diversity'. The children created coprolites (fossilized faeces) that included different food items that people would have eaten in Britain throughout history. The children noticed that as new people migrated to Britain, the diet became more varied. Pupils then read the book 'Going Home' and researched animals that migrated to and from the UK.

Next, the children wrote a story in the style of 'Going Home', about an animal we had become knowledgeable about. Year 5 pupils then compared lifecycles of different living things, such as mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Each pair then created their own 3D lifecycle. From reading 'Cicada' by Shaun Tann, the children moved onto researching other art from migrant artists. They found out about Zarina Hashmi and how much of her art work was based on finding a home. Year 5 children made their own paper and then recreated 'Under a Dark Sky.'

Year 5 children have also researched how different people have migrated to Britain, including the Vikings, Palatines and Huguenots. They created a double-page spread about Viking life, discussing what sort of resources might be needed in an emergency and planned their own 'Emergency kit bag.'
