What a brilliant term of learning Year 1 children have had!
We started the term by learning about Picasso and created our own versions of his famous portrait 'Girl Before Mirror.' We looked at the emotions of the people in some of his different portraits and explored how colour is linked to these. We also went on an art trip to Leeds Castle during which we spent time sketching different parts of the castle and its grounds. Following this we linked our work to that of Peter Bruegel the Elder. We used our own sketches to create winter scenes of the castle and grounds and worked to compare our work to 'Hunters in the Snow.'
Our next focus artist was L.S. Lowry. We looked at the way he used five colours in his work 'Going to Mill' and we created our own versions of this using pastels, chalk, charcoal and pens. For our writing outcomes, we created fact files about our focus artists, wrote a setting description of Leeds Castle and created our own poetry work based on a colour in the style of Christina Rossetti. The final artist we learnt about this term was Yaoi Kusama and, as part of our PYP Mini Exhibition, we made our own spotty handkerchiefs in the style of her work!
Year 1 children also had a very special visit from a local artist called Nell and we took part in a printing workshop. Pupils created their own prints in the style of Andy Warhol.
What a fantastic term of learning we have had!
