Student & Family Support Services Form
L.I.N.K. - Leadership, Initiative, Networking, Knowledge - began many years ago and has since had many previous names! This event was held for students from each region to come together for educational and social activities during which students experience no barriers due to their hearing loss and are able to meet others like them. KSD Outreach also previously hosted Regional Spelling Bees for students with hearing loss. It was later decided that knowing the meaning of the vocabulary was being lost in the memorization of the spelling, and thus led to the Vocabulary Bowl. Eventually, these events were combined into one - L.I.N.K.ed Vocabulary!!
L.I.N.K.ed Vocabulary is centered around a themed approach, providing a unique and interactive learning environment with full communication access. These hands-on experiences not only support academic growth but also address essential skills not covered in the general curriculum—skills like self-identification of hearing loss and self-advocacy.
Recognizing that many students with hearing loss may be the only ones in their school or district, our events serve as a vital opportunity for them to connect with peers and adults who understand their journey. During breaks and lunch, students enjoy socializing, as well as building a sense of community and solidarity.
L.I.N.K.ed Vocabulary doesn't solely focus on students; we extend our support to parents through dedicated sessions, covering various topics and providing a platform for mutual support and unbiased resources.
Above all, L.I.N.K.ed Vocabulary events are designed to be enjoyable. We believe that fostering a supportive and fun environment contributes to a positive and enriching experience for everyone involved. We aim to create lasting memories, forge connections, and celebrate the unique strengths within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
