To begin our new topic, we started off by investigating the properties of different types of rocks. In order to do this, we needed to learn some new vocabulary. We learnt about permeability, durability and density. We used magnifying glasses to examine the rocks and tested density and permeability by placing our rocks in buckets of water.
Today, we learnt about sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. All rocks fall in to one of these three types depending on how they are formed. To demonstrate the ways these three types of rocks are formed, we replicated the process using starbursts. We pushed chunks of starburst together to demonstrate the process of forming sedimentary rocks then applied extreme heat and pressure using our hands to create an irreversable change to replicate the process of forming a metamorphic rock. We then placed our starburst rocks in the microwave to demonstrate the way hot lava would cool to create igneous rocks.
