It is really useful for both young people and parents/carers to understand labour market information (LMI). The term ‘labour market’ is used to refer to the relationship between those in need of labour (such as employers), and those who can supply labour (such as employees).
The labour market is in a constant state of change as it responds to the needs of employers, who in turn respond to influences in the local and wider environment. Many things can affect the labour market. For example, new housing or shopping centres, the loss of a large factory or local industry or most recently Covid-19.
LMI will give you knowledge about different careers, their entry routes, promotional prospects, salaries paid, skills and qualifications needed.
LMI also covers future demand – what kinds of jobs will be in demand after leaving school and what kinds of skills will be needed?
By knowing and understanding the current labour market, young people are more likely to be able to:
make informed choices about choosing an occupation
identify the best sources of training and education
check out trends in a particular sector or geographical area
conduct a focused job search.
Watch the videos, take a look at some of the links and use the careerometer below to further understand LMI.
Use the Careerometer below to compare different jobs — salary, working hours, etc.
Click the dotted square. Type in the first career that you think you might be interested in and select from the drop-down list, then add your second choice to see the comparison.
