Case Studies

Being a leading printing service provider in Hong Kong offering high quality and speedy printing services, ePrint has a telephone support center manned by over 100 agents handling all sorts of customer service enquiries. It is possibly one of the busiest commercial setup servicing daily average of 5000 calls in Hong Kong. Core to the center’s IT infrastructure is a computer telephony setup comprising of a IP based telephone system with 200 internal extensions linking up agents in 11 Hong Kong shops and 4 China offices, a contact center agent management software, an enterprise resources management system (ERP) with a front end customer relationship management system (CRM) and an interactive voice response system (IVRS).

The computer telephony integration allows agents to place sales orders for customers, inquire production and delivery schedule for them. When agents are busy, customers can check via the IVRS on order, delivery and payment status. The same IVRS can also be programmed to call customers automatically reminding them to pick up and pay for their orders.

Subject to intense market competition for service responsiveness and quality, ePrint decided in 2016 they had to look for the replacement solution of their ageing telephone center that could connect to their then in-house developing ERP cum CRM system in order to compete. After surveying the mostly global brand contact center solutions, they reckoned those not only expensive to acquire and deploy across Hong Kong and China but were almost impossible to integrate with their home-grown ERP system not to mention many customizations required for the industry.

ePrint began to search for a local development company with the relevant computer telephone integration project experience for the project. Backed by many large government and commercial deployment experience since 2005 till recent days, KanHan’s HanPHONE computer telephony platform stood out easily as a local market leader with proven local development commitment for continuity. An evaluation project was initiated in 2017 to study how the HanPHONE contact center software can be enhanced to meet ePrint’s specific business requirements. The order was subsequently confirmed resulting to the replacement solution being scheduled with the following three phased release.

Phase 1: Installation of HanPHONE software based IP-PBX system connecting 11 Hong Kong shops and 4 China offices

Phase 2: Customization of HanPHONE contact center software and the setup of IVRS system to ePrint’s operational requirements.

Phase 3: Development of the HanPHONE interface to ePrint’s ERP/CRM system

The complete integrated system designed running on a nonstop high-availability hardware platform was successfully launched in May 2019. KanHan has once again proven our home grown technologies and service is the best fit for local business requiring a sophisticated contact center setup connecting their customers via telephone.

A gentle beep for Hong Kong Stoma Association’s members

Maintaining member record and activity enrollment is essential for an association.Hong Kong Stoma Association (The Association) has admitted over thousand members since its establishment in 1979 and is urgently in need of a computer system in organizing and recording their conditions and activities. The desired membership system, designed and developed by Kanhan, is launched this year to record member activities in a more timely fashion. Whenever members and their relatives attend events at The Association, a portable card reader will record the newly introduced 2D barcode printed membership card presented by them for their attendance into the new system.

As a member of The Association, Ms. Wong said, “Using the membership card is more convenient and time saving, especially useful for large events which used paper record in the old days. The new membership card is definitely a more efficient way in keeping our records. One beep, one record.”

In addition, the portable barcode reader conveniently helps staff keep enrollment records for all outdoor or in-house events, drastically reducing the administrative chores.

The Association organizes regular support group meetings for members joined in two years on change adaption from ostomy. The new system can also print a registration form for staff to record attendance and other remarks manually.

The new membership card carries the same warm and soft color tone as of the Association’s website also designed and developed by KanHan.

For more details of the membership system, contact us at (852) 2851 3020 or email to info@kanhan.com for further arrangement.

LAMTEX SECURITIES Ltd. opted for KanHan’s One-stop Telecom & IT Solution

Established in 1988, LAMTEX SECURITIES Ltd. (LAMTEX) has been providing various financial services in Hong Kong. In coping with her expansion plan suited for the Internet era, LAMTEX has chosen KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) to supply a telecom and IT infrastructure that can readily adapt to the fast-changing technology stoked business environment and at the same time fulfill the compliance requirements stipulated by the local regulatory authority. The one-stop solution comprises of Cloud based telephone and voice recording subscription service, website and mobile app development service.

Cloud PABX Telephone Service

LAMTEX’s expansion plan entails a larger office with the need of an easily expandable telephone system. Going against the traditional approach of acquiring a new PABX telephone system, LAMTEX subscribes to KanHan’s Cloud based telephone service. The subscription enables telephony over IP such that telephone sets can plug into their existing broadband network with no need of separate cabling and new lines can be easily added through new subscription requiring no installation. LAMTEX is convinced the rental service is far more economical and flexible to the traditional telephone system they used to have. KANHAN also helped migrate their used telephone numbers to the subscribed service minimizing disruption to daily operation due to the office relocation.

Cloud Voice Recording Service

KanHan’s Cloud based Telephone Service also brings to the benefit that all lines can be optionally enabled with voice recording function which is important for regulatory compliance. LAMTEX doesn’t have to purchase voice recording machine which costs a fairly high price for maintenance. Using the phone numbers provided by KanHan to dial or receive calls, all conversations are automatically recorded, encrypted and stored to the Cloud servers. Users can review the saved voice recording on a secured designated website. An extended service is also available for users to record customer conversation when they are away from office via a mobile application. The recordings are saved to the Cloud servers under the same subscription plan. Not only has the voice recording service provided a centralized management of required recorded conversations for LAMTEX, as a third party independent supplier KanHan can accredit the recording a reliable evidence to fall back on when assessing any dispute between brokers and their clients concerning the particulars of a trade order. KanHan’s Cloud Voice Recording Service is an ideal solution to fulfill LAMTEX’s expectation in terms of cost, security and reliability.

Website and Mobile Application Development

To facilitate clients to access LAMTEX’s service information and the online stock trading system from their computers and smartphones, KanHan has also designed and developed a website and its accompanying mobile application for the company. Adding that the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect scheme has been introduced, the website also adopts another KanHan product HanWEB to perform Traditional Chinese information to Simplified Chinese translation in real time for investors from China. The mobile application can be used to check stock price, execute online stock trading and read news for smartphone users.

Apps to Support Kids with Dyslexia

Apps to Support Kids with Dyslexia

With limited access to the latest technologies, learning Chinese characters could be a tough task for kids with dyslexia. Teachers can only rely on prior experience to help them using traditional approach. Costly treatment is a barrier to parents as well. Learning disability from dyslexia causes kids hard to learn to read and understand written language.

In Hong Kong, there are about 25,000 kids having dyslexia. Aiming to develop game based therapeutic tool to help them, Hong Kong Youth Women’s Christian Association (HKYWCA) has invited KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) to produce a game “HOPE中文拆字遊戲”which is the first mobile application running on Android and iOS devices to tackle dyslexia. Walking through the classic fairy tales such as “Three Little Pig”and “The Emperor's New Clothes”, kids can learn from games strengthening their proficiency and interest of learning Chinese.

There are 5 stories in the mentioned application, including “Three Little Pigs”, “Ugly Duckling”, “The Emperor's New Clothes”, “The Happy Prince and Other Tales” and “Robinson Crusoe”. Each story has 4 stages with voice-over for listening. When learners activate each game, the mission is to match accurately the corresponding strokes of the Chinese characters in order to move to next level. KanHan is the main developer for the design, development of the mobile application and the production of voice-over in the project.

Upon completion of each story, learners can use the camera in their mobile devices to activate the 3D graphic of the mission cards downloadable from HKYWCA. Using Augmented Reality (AR), the 3D graphic and Chinese characters will be illustrated in learners’ mobile devices to arouse their interests in learning Chinese. Learners can even create e-cards with default template for sharing their accomplishments with friends via different social media platforms.

This is the first AR adoption in mobile application development by KanHan. The use of the state-of-art technology will be further explored and applied in various applications across different industries.

KanHan’s Responsive Website Development

Background

The introduction of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has immensely changed the way that people perceives information and how they access to a sea of information on the internet. Website is no longer served solely for desktop computers but also crucial to cater for mobile devices nowadays.

Responsive Web Design (RWD) is an approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices. The Hong Kong Stoma Association used to have a proprietary website developed with traditional technique to fulfill the requirements of desktop computers. To accommodate the capacity of mobile devices’ users, they have decided to move on to RWD and invited KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) to develop its first website using RWD. (http://www.stoma.org.hk/en)

Content Management System

Like any other websites, content management system (CMS) is an inseparable part of it. The content management system built by KanHan for the Hong Kong Stoma Association’s website is capable of more than just editing, modifying and publishing website contents. The CMS behind this website can be assessed by mobile devices including but not limited to smartphones and tablets. This feature helps users to access the CMS from anywhere and any device which brings true convenience to them.

WCAG Assessment and Rectification

Apart from website development, KanHan has helped carry out Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) assessment and rectification for the revamped website.

Our service includes:

  • Use of scanning tool, visual review and fail case testing based on WCAG 2.0 guidelines.
  • Provide detailed analysis report containing evaluation on compliant criteria, summary and recommended actions.
  • Offer technical solutions to achieve WCAG conformance.
  • Provide workshops to explain the idea of WCAG conformance.
  • Rectify and re-organize the website format and design in conformance to WCAG 2.0 Level AA requirements.
  • Support rectification services on PDF, UNICODE migration, image and video to conform to WCAG2.0 guidelines.
  • Migrate existing data to Content Management System (CMS)
  • Enhance Text version website according to WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

Web Design

In the revamped website, our team has redesigned the previous website using photos with eye-catching graphic, vibrant colors and appealing icons to strengthen the user-friendliness of the website, revitalizing it with a distinct look and feel.

A Case Study of the Integration of HanPhone IVR and Electronic Health Record System from the Hospital Authority

Background

Decades ago, if the Hospital Authority (HA) wanted to find a patient’s health record, it might take a lengthy time to do that and possibly affect the result and efficiency of the diagnosis due to the inaccuracy of the record. Sharing of health records was hardly achievable at that time. The consequence could be severe as it might lead to serious medical mistakes. Thereby, the HA is going to implement an electronic health record sharing system named “Electronic Health Record” (eHR) by late 2014 to facilitate the existing Clinical Management System (CMS) in order to mainly achieve a higher efficiency and quality assured care delivery. More importantly, it enables sharing of health records between multiple parties to maintain comprehensive online health record.

While the HA is serving as the technical agency for developing the eHR Core Sharing Infrastructure, The Food and Health Bureau has set up a dedicated eHR Office to oversee the development of the eHR Sharing System.

At the first stage, the eHR system aims to establish a connection with all public and private hospitals as well as the private doctors, clinics and even other health service professionals in Hong Kong to share the health records. The HA will also make an attempt to strengthen and stabilize the system to protect data privacy and system security at this point.

Problem

Albeit the eHR system is primarily accessed by the related parties online, it is important that the HA wants to retain a more traditional yet useful way, a telephone system, to allow stakeholders to access the voluminous health record database. However, the HA lacks the expertise to establish a versatile Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) enabling the digitized records be presented in a voice accessible format

Solution

In this case, KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) has proposed HanPhone, a market leading telephony product of KanHan, to build the IVR system with real-time access to the eHR system.. Regardless of being inexperience on setting up a considerably sizable telephone system by the HA, HanPhone IVR can still be installed and normally functioned under the professional instruction and assistance from KanHan.

The eHR IVR system consists of two production servers and one more for User Acceptance Test. Each of them is connected with 100 telephone lines to handle the huge amount of daily usage. In addition to the system setup. KanHan is also providing trainings to the HA staff on how to effectively establish their call flows for the eHR system and get the most out of HanPhone IVR for timely and accurate delivery of patient information to the telephone users.. .

HanPhone IVR is an award winning, innovative web-based voice application platform for the design and creation of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. Its unique web-based development environment makes creation and maintenance of IVR system as easy as developing a website and allows telephone users accessing real-time information from the web. Furthermore, the web-based management interface allows users to control the IVR system easily anywhere from an Internet connected PC. And best of all, common webpage editing tools can be used to edit the procedure and content of the IVR system so as to fit the organization's specific purposes.

Conclusion

The adoption of HanPhone IVR for the eHR system will soon be used extensively in Hong Kong by the HA and the stakeholders. It helps provide an alternative for the eHR system to share health records and ensure a stable and versatile IVR system. HanPhone IVR saves the manpower and time on constructing an IVR system for the HA, makes it truly beneficial to the patients, clinicians and society.

A Major Exemplary KanHan WCMS Project

Overview

Well-known for KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) is the experience of system development and information technology related projects. Invited by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and Environment Bureau (ENB), KanHan is responsible for developing a web content management system (WCMS) and delivering Web Accessibility Services.

Developing a WCMS for new EPD&ENB’s websites and content migration

A WCMS is basically an essence for every website and a ubiquitous system used by the HKSAR government departments to date. Developing a WCMS is surely KanHan’s expertise but the real challenge was coordination and project management. In terms of coordination, our team had to communicate with more than 100 divisions of EPD to ensure all the parties would be able to reach a consensus. A meeting with more than 100 representatives was held every two weeks to report the progress. With extensive experience and ability, our team had made an exceptional performance beyond expectation and with satisfaction.

Detail Project management plays a crucial role in this project as our system development team was only given a very limited time to migrate the existing data to the newly-built system. Normally, it could take more than a year to finish such a strenuous and time-consuming content migration task especially when WCAG rectification is required for over 50,000 pages. However, with excellent team spirit, outstanding project management and customized migration tools, our team ended up taking less than 3 months which is way shorter than the requested time to complete this task.

Following the global trend of adopting open source technology in developed countries for its sustainability and cost-effectiveness, EPD and ENB decided to take a big leap to adopt this approach in order to optimize the resource allocation focused on business analysis and customization to fit for the unique need of the department.

Modern vs. WCAG design

Striking a balance between a contemporary and a WCAG friendly design is yet another challenge in this project. The primary purpose of this project is to revamp its website and supposedly bring a more refined look & feel for the website. However, the conflicts between modernity and practicability are inevitable and hardly for both to exist in terms of web design. Therefore, the first thing our team members had to accomplish was to educate the clients about WCAG which is a guideline strictly implemented by the Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR) Government and ask the clients to relinquish the idea of a modern web design. After that, our team member could start working on the fonts, colors and contrast which comply with WCAG.

WCAG Conformance

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) conformance is considered to be the second most significant task of the project. To meet the guidelines, our team has to undergo thorough and succinct consideration on the fonts, color, contrast and many other elements using scanning tool, visual review and fail case testing. KanHan also provides detailed analysis report containing evaluation on compliant criteria, summary and recommended actions. Integrating WCAG with WCMS, customized content editing tools and WCAG validation module are provided ensuring full conformance.

Additionally, KanHan is required to rectify 1,800 Portable Document Format (PDF) with over 18,000 pages. Applying the professional software, Adobe Acrobat Pro XI, to perform PDF Categorization, Tagging PDF Documents, a full conformance under WCAG formed by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been successfully achieved.

Air Quality Health Index

The “Air Quality Health Index” is developed to embed this service onto several websites to benefit the public. In terms of development, KanHan designed the Air Quality Health Index displaying on the website and ensured that the data are synchronized with the stations and deliver accurately and timely to the public.

Multi-languages website

EPD and ENB’s website is capable of providing multi-languages including Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and English to different users. Users can easily choose an appropriate language from the landing page. The provision of Simplified Chinese had to credit much to HanWEB which is a remarkable and popular solution of KanHan.

Mobile / Accessible Version

Smartphone and tablets take up the majority of internet surfing devices to date. It is more usual to see people holding mobile devices than using desktop computers. Therefore, KanHan has obtained EPD’s request to design a mobile / accessible version for the website to allow mobile devices’ users to fetch the information like desktop users.

WCMS Training for users

Upon the completion of the project, KanHan has conducted a series of Web content management system (WCMS) training sessions specifically for EPD and ENB’s users. We have assigned our project manager and system developers to demonstrate a live demo and explain every detail of the system. We also created a multiple of demo accounts for the users to have a first-hand experience of the WCMS to allow them to follow our instructions concurrently to amplify their familiarity with the new WCMS. A Q&A session has also been reserved for users to raise questions about the WCMS. A handful of opinions have been collected during the Q&A sessions which help improve our level of development.

Others

KanHan’s one-stop website and mobile application development service has been catering for projects among various government departments, schools and companies. The service provides, in addition to the website specific functions, a web accessibility solution and a framework for adoption of multiple communication tools and social media channels for promotional and opinion collection purposes.

Announcing Third-Party IVR Maintenance and Replacement Program

KanHan Technologies Limited (KanHan) is introducing to Hong Kong SAR Government departments third-party Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system maintenance and upgrade program.

Majority of government departments are providing service hotlines for citizen enquires. Some are fronted with IVR technologies for efficient call distribution and information delivery. These existing IVR systems are mostly proprietary based acquired some years ago. The aging IVR systems are expensive to maintain due to arcane technologies and some have been even abandoned by the original local or oversea system developers.

KanHan has since 2003 been supplying self-developed, award-winning HanPHONE IVR systems to many government departments replacing their proprietary based IVR systems with one that is built on open and web based technologies. There are over thousand HanPHONE powered IVR lines now serving Hong Kong citizens.

Backed by years of research and development experience in computer to telephony technologies, KanHan is launching a maintenance and replacement program for third-party IVR systems specially catered for government departments. The program offers system maintenance, call-flow amendments, and voice related services with the optional HanPHONE upgrade package covering brands like Voice Master, Intervoice/IQ TALK, Proactive IVRS, Syniverse and others.

The most recent case is Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department's July decision in choosing the program replacing their existing IVR system supplier's maintenance service at a reduced cost and enhanced service level. The program also offers the Department an ease of mind for future system migration to modern day technologies.

The root of KH Education goes back as early as 2003 when e-Putonghua Online Platform (ePTH), the pioneered self-paced e-learning service for corporate staff training was launched. Since then, many large Hong Kong corporate employers have chosen ePTH for their staff training in Putonghua for its easy to follow curriculum, advanced tools and cost-effectiveness. Those using ePTH include Vocational Training Council, Civil Service Bureau of HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Electric and HSBC.

With increasing popularity of online courseware in Hong Kong education sector, KIDPTH and TEENS Putonghua Online Platform, the first e-learning curriculum of Putonghua designated for primary and secondary schools have been proactively launched from 2005 onwards to cope with nowadays academic needs. Catering the study progress of students, the entire course is further categorized from Primary One to Secondary Six. The comprehensive learning for Chinese language orienting towards using Putonghua as the teaching medium, as proposed by the Education Bureau, instigates the release of the KanHan Chinese Language Learning Portal in 2008, comprising of liberal studies, poems and specific skills upon reading. The provision of Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) practices brushes up students' Chinese language on the aspect of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Eyeing on the market potential, KH Education takes hold of this opportunity to make further investment upon education research to enhance services coverage.

KH Education also carries the social objective in helping children in China access to basic education, hoping by bringing the plight of those in needs to the awareness of Hong Kong students will serve both educational and fund-raising purposes. KH Education is joining hands with Chi Heng Foundation (CHF) to raise funds by means of a series of functions and activities in the coming year. CHF, founded in 1998 is a Hong Kong based registered charity whose main purpose is to help children affected by their AIDS infected parents in some of the poorest rural areas in China because of the scandalous blood selling practice. "Chi Heng" implies "wisdom in action" with the beliefs of using knowledge to assist those who are in dire need of help. CHF moves from village to village throughout Central China offering help to all children affected by AIDS, thereby ensuring that no child is excluded and each child's needs are fully addressed.
