Career Planning

CAREER PLANNING & JOB SEEKING/KEEPING SKILLS

South Dakota Department of Education supports career exploration utilizing Xello. Students can log into their account using their K12 email address and their Chromebook password.  School counselors go through this with sophomores every year.

Job Shadowing Opportunities

Job shadowing can be a very important tool for students when looking into career fields. This is usually just a 2-4 hour visit at a place of employment that you'd like to know more about. For most businesses, students can call and inquire if they allow job shadowing and if so, how they can set that up. Students should visit with their counselor for more information.

What is Career Planning?

Career Planning is setting short and long-term goals and then figuring out what you need to do to reach them.

Students can utilize SDMyLife.com (login utilizing your K12 email address and Chromebook password) to have access to the interest inventory and a wide variety of career information.

 Three components to Career Planning:

Prioritize the following questions for yourself and evaluate your top occupational choices by the criteria you define.

Interest:  Would I like this kind of work well enough to do it as a career?

Skills, Abilities, Aptitudes:  Do I have the skills and abilities needed, or the potential to develop them?

Physical Capabilities:  What level of physical activity does the job require, and do I meet those requirements?

Temperaments and Values:  Will this job accommodate my personal characteristics and meet my work value needs?

Work Setting:  In what type of environment will I expect to accomplish job tasks?

Preparation:  Am I willing to pursue the level of education and training required?

Employment Opportunity:  What are my chances of getting into this type of work?  What are the opportunities for advancement?

Your career, more than any other factor, determines how you will live —the kinds of people with whom you’ll associate, your activities and your lifestyle.  CHOOSE YOUR CAREER CAREFULLY!
