Rising from Our Roots scholarship
Congratulations to the first four recipients of the Rising from Our Roots Scholarship!
Pauleen Keith Figuracion, Evon Jyka Lozano, Amleht Netwan, and Christian Dave Tangonan were awarded $1000 scholarships on April 30, 2024. These four students are wonderful examples of the potential of the multilingual students of Waipahu High School. They each have a story published in Rising for Our Roots, participated in visits to elementary and middle schools or other community events to share their stories in support of the book, and they have all earned the Seal of Biliteracy. All four have plans for post-secondary education, pursuing degrees in biology, civil engineering, entrepreneurship, and nursing.
The application window will reopen in January 2025. Email jeremiah.brown@k12.hi.us to be notified.
The Rising From our Roots Scholarship is in memory of Mrs. Ann Wong, whose dedication to the multilingual students of Waipahu High School continues to inspire the English Learners program today. It is funded by sales of the book and awards deserving students with $1000 for post-secondary education.
