Holding On

Email jeremiah.brown@k12.hi.us for more information on Holding On or to invite student authors to share their stories at your school.

Holding On is a collection of folktales from the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, and Chuuk that have been passed down through the generations and kept alive by the Multilingual Marauders of Waipahu High School. Some tales stay true to their origins, while others have been adapted to include the author’s interpretation or into a graphic novel format to appeal to readers of all ages.

After hearing these stories from their elders or reading them in books, the student authors wanted to preserve them for the next generation and for new audiences. Holding On contains the collective wisdom and lessons of their rich cultural traditions.

This project was supported by the Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant, Bess Press, and the Leeward District EL team. It was made possible by the hard work and dedication of teachers Chloe Maeshiro, Lori Murakami, and Jiamin Ruan and the multilingual students of Waipahu High School.
