This is a FIRST year course designed to inform students about careers in the Health Services field, as well as basic medical skills and terminology. This Level 1 course serves as the foundation course for the Emergency Medical Services, Human Performance Therapeutic Services and Nursing Services programs of study. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will have foundational knowledge of various medical careers, foundational healthcare skills, safety skills, traditional Hawaiian health care philosophies and ethics. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become American Red Cross First Aid certified.

Advanced Health Services is the SECOND year course, designed to develop student understanding of the structures and functions of the human body, in the Health Services Pathway. This Level 2 course serves as the second year course for the Emergency Medical Services, Human Performance Therapeutic Services and Nursing Services Programs of Study. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to characterize the functions of various organs and body systems and their interplay with one another in the human body. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become American Red Cross CPR/AED certified.

Principles of Therapeutic Services is a THIRD year course, designed to inform students about the therapeutic services and various treatments and procedures. This Level 3 course is specific to the Human Performance Therapeutic Services program of study. Careers in this pathway include physical therapist, speech and language pathologist, athletic trainer, surgical technicians and home health aids. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to recognize disorders and/or injuries to the human body and create a basic treatment plan for the relevant issue using appropriate treatment modalities. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become OSHA 10-hour General Industry (Healthcare) certified.

Kinesiology is a FOURTH year capstone course for the Human Performance Therapeutic Services Program of Study, within the Health Services Pathway. This course is designed to inform students about exercise physiology and various treatments and procedures that can be performed. Students will be interacting and engaging in activities that will prepare them for real-world application. Upon completion of the course, a proficient student will be able to explain the physiology of the body, perform fitness measures, and develop an exercise and fitness approach that can be implemented. As part of a student’s Program of Study progression, the student will maintain a digital portfolio providing evidence of mastery of the course standards and readiness to advance and complete the Program of Study.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to become OSHA 10-hour General Industry (Healthcare) certified.

Nursing Services: Work-Based Learning is a FOURTH year capstone course in the Nursing Services Program of Study. It is intended to provide a work-based learning experience for students to develop further understanding of professional issues, utilize employability skills, and demonstrate mastery of academic and technical skills learned throughout this Program of Study. Instruction will be delivered through on-campus classroom instruction during the first semester and a work-based learning placement in the healthcare field during their second semester. Students will need to secure a position and arrange for their own transportation. Students will need to complete a minimum of 60 hours of work-based learning experience.

CNA Nursing Services is a FOURTH year capstone course in the Nursing Services Program of Study. Students will enroll in a Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) course offered through Leeward Community College (LCC). This course is designed to educate and train nurse assistants for employment in long term care facilities and will consist of lecture, laboratory practice, and observation. Enrollment in this course may involve a fee, which includes course materials and supplies. Students will need to arrange for their own transportation to LCC for the duration of this program, which will include some weekdays, weekends, and Spring Break. Approximate time spent on the course is 150 hours total. After successful completion of this course, students have the option of taking the Prometric Nurse Aide exam in order to be awarded their CNA Certificate and be registered in the Hawaii CNA Registry. Please note that students will not receive college credit from LCC for this licensure program.
