Foundations of Health Services

This is a FIRST year course designed to inform students about careers in the Health Services field, as well as basic medical skills and terminology. This Level 1 course serves as the foundation course for the Emergency Medical Services, Human Performance Therapeutic Services and Nursing Services programs of study. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will have foundational knowledge of various medical careers, foundational healthcare skills, safety skills, traditional Hawaiian health care philosophies and ethics. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become American Red Cross First Aid certified.

Advanced Health Services is the SECOND year course, designed to develop student understanding of the structures and functions of the human body, in the Health Services Pathway. This Level 2 course serves as the second year course for the Emergency Medical Services, Human Performance Therapeutic Services and Nursing Services Programs of Study. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to characterize the functions of various organs and body systems and their interplay with one another in the human body. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become American Red Cross CPR/AED certified.

Emergency Medical Services 1 is a THIRD year course, designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the field of pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services. This Level 3 course is specific to the Emergency Medical Services program of study. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to recognize medical and trauma emergencies, evaluate medical situations, and apply basic technical knowledge and skills required in medical and trauma assessments. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become OSHA 10-hour General Industry (Healthcare) certified.

Principles of Therapeutic Services

Principles of Therapeutic Services is a THIRD year course, designed to inform students about the therapeutic services and various treatments and procedures. This Level 3 course is specific to the Human Performance Therapeutic Services program of study. Careers in this pathway include physical therapist, speech and language pathologist, athletic trainer, surgical technicians and home health aids. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to recognize disorders and/or injuries to the human body and create a basic treatment plan for the relevant issue using appropriate treatment modalities. In addition, students will have the opportunity to become OSHA 10-hour General Industry (Healthcare) certified.

certified nurse aid: work-based learning

ACCN#: THS4100

Certified Nurse Aide WBL is the FOURTH year capstone course in the Nursing Services program of study. It is intended to provide a work-based learning experience for students to develop further understanding of professional issues, utilize employability skills, and demonstrate mastery of academic and technical skills learned throughout this program of study. The work-based learning experience provides opportunities to apply and practice the knowledge and skills learned in previous courses and gives students hands-on practical experiences related to nursing services and related fields of occupation. A student will be able to document logged hours in a health care-related setting and demonstrate mastery of skills learned throughout this program of study. Instruction will be delivered through a classroom environment, in conjunction with a work-based learning placement.
