Program of study: digital design

The Digital Design program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to use industry-standard software to create multimedia projects, web pages, three-dimensional models, and animations. Students will also acquire project management and entrepreneurship knowledge and skills to support independent and small business operations.

This is the FIRST year course in the Digital Design and Film & Media Production Program of Study(s). Students will be introduced to basic concepts in Visual, Fashion, Performing, Written, and Media Arts. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the following concepts will be covered: 1) Innovation 2) Legal and Ethical Issues 3) Communication 4) Aesthetics 5) Problem Solving 6) Safety. This course will focus on the basics of graphic design and digital media. This course is a prerequisite for students pursuing a Career and Technology Education program of study in Arts and Communication.

Course Name: GRAPHIC DESIGN TECH 1

Digital Design 1 is a SECOND year course (recommended for grades 10-12) providing classroom and laboratory experiences in the major areas of graphic design and production. This course includes the study of the fundamental elements and principles of design, colors, layering, layout, photography concepts, plagiarism, advertising and production techniques. Emphasis is on the creation of designs and products that meet specifications of clients and industry.

This course completes the Digital Design Program of Study.

Course Name: GRAPHIC DESIGN TECH 2

Digital Design 2 is a THIRD year course (recommended for grades 11-12) graphics course. This course provides advanced classroom and laboratory experiences in the major areas of graphic design and production. This course includes an in depth study of the elements and principles of design, layout, photography, legal and ethical issues, advertising, and production techniques. Emphasis is on the creation of refined and targeted designs that serve a defined purpose and audience. The advanced curriculum activities may include graphic design, typography, computer graphics, silk screening and vinyl sticker graphics.

The Fashion and Artisan Design program is designed to support students who desire to pursue a career in cultural-related artistry and fashion mediums. Students will also acquire project management and entrepreneurship knowledge and skills to support independent and small business operations.

FOUNDATIONS OF FASHION & ARTISAN DESIGN

This is the FIRST year course for those pursuing the Fashion and Artisan Design Program of Study. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the foundation to design and create garments. This includes the history of fashion, trend forecasting, the fashion cycle, as well as an understanding of textiles. Students will learn elements and principles of design to illustrate their designs and produce them through pattern making and manipulation, and garment construction.

The Film and Media Production program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to obtain an entry-level career in the industry and/or pursue advanced learning at the collegiate level. Students will learn the skills necessary for jobs within the industry (commercial studios, production companies, and television), including production, direction, artistry and set design, camera operation, script editing and supervision, etc.

Course Name: DIGITAL MEDIA TECH

Digital Video Technology is a SECOND year course (recommended for grades 10-12) designed to aid in the development of the student’s awareness and understanding of how electronic media is used in the field of communication. Students will be equipped with the necessary skills to support and enhance their use of digital media technologies. Topics will include the creation of media content, its communicative abilities, the production process, and legal concerns.

Course Name: BROADCAST MEDIA

This is the THIRD year course (recommended for grades 11-12) in the Film and Media program of study. This course is designed to give students hands-on opportunities in television news production. Through a variety of production experiences, students will learn the power of the medium, examine issues of fairness and objectivity, make critical thinking decisions on a regular basis, exercise creativity, and gain an overall understanding of news-gathering and reporting techniques.

FILM & MEDIA PRODUCTIONS: WORK-BASED LEARNING

This is the FOURTH year course (recommended for grades 11-12) in the graphic design program of study. This course provides expanded knowledge in a specific area of graphic design, including an in-depth study of the elements and principles of design, layout, photography, legal and ethical issues, advertising, and production techniques. Emphasis is on an in-depth study of concepts, theories, and expertise of graphic design. In order for students to enroll in this course they must successfully complete Graphic Design Tech 2 (TAN2400) and obtain teacher approval.
