Hawaii has a teacher shortage of It is predicted that the United States will experience a shortage of almost 200,000 teachers by 2025. Due to the recent landscape in education, high demand areas will include those requiring special training in math and science, working with English as a Second Language, working with those identified with special needs and working within schools which serve a significant percentage of students from low-income situations.

Students are provided with the knowledge and skills related to the components of instruction, teaching strategies, assessments, student learning, special populations, educational technology, classroom management, lesson planning, professional ethics.

Foundations of Education is an introductory course designed to inform students about careers in education and learning support professions including teaching, counseling, and areas of specialization in education. This course serves as the foundation course for the Teaching as a Profession (TAP) (PreK-12). Upon completion of the course, a proficient student will have foundational knowledge of human development, understanding of course standards and curriculum, the history of public education, and required ethical and professional responsibilities. As part of a student’s program of study progression, the student will create a digital program of study portfolio, providing evidence of mastery of course standards and readiness to advance and complete the program of study.

Teaching as a Profession 1 is the second course in the Teaching as a Profession (TAP) (PreK-12) program of study designed for students who are interested in teaching in the classroom. This course covers components on instruction, teaching strategies, student learning, English Learner and special populations, and educational technology. Upon completion of the course, a proficient student will have a fundamental understanding of the trajectory of learning and be prepared for the application of these concepts. As part of a student’s program of study progression, the student will maintain a digital program of study portfolio, providing evidence of mastery of course standards and readiness to advance and complete the program of study.

Teaching as a Profession 2 is the third course in the Teaching as a Profession (TAP) (PreK-12) program of study designed for students who are interested in teaching in the classroom. This course covers components of instruction and student learning, classroom management, and concepts of higher-order thinking. Upon completion of the course, a proficient student will be prepared to take the capstone course, Teaching as a Profession WBL, and further their studies at the postsecondary level. As part of a student’s program of study progression, the student will maintain a digital program of study portfolio, providing evidence of mastery of course standards and readiness to advance and complete the program of study.

Teaching as a Profession: WBL is the capstone course in the Teaching as a Profession (TAP) (PreK-12) program of study. It is intended to provide a work-based learning experience for students to develop further understanding of professional and ethical issues, utilize employability skills, and demonstrate mastery of academic and technical skills learned through the program of study. The WBL experience provides opportunities to apply and practice the knowledge and skills learned in previous courses and gives students hands-on practical experiences related to professions in PreK-12 education. Instruction will be delivered through the classroom environment in conjunction with a work-based learning placement, such as an internship.
