In order to be promoted at FET level a learner must attain all of the following criteria:
A minimum of 40% for English and two other subjects
As well as a minimum of 30% for three of the remaining subjects.

Higher Certificate Pass:
Pass the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
Diploma Pass:
Pass the NSC with an achievement rating of 3 (40-49%) or better in four subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
Note: Each institution may have its own additional requirements for entry into specific courses.
Bachelor’s Degree Pass:
Pass the NSC with an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in four subjects (excluding Life Orientation).

In the FET phase, the assessment of a learner's performance is divided as follows:
Cycle Tests and Examinations: Constitute 75% of the term mark.
School-Based Assessments (SBA): Include all other class-based work and constitute the remaining 25% of the term mark.
