First Additional Language
Students must select one First Additional Language from the following options:
Afrikaans First Additional Language
isiZulu First Additional Language
Important Note: We strongly recommend that learners continue with the First Additional Language they studied in the GET phase (Grades 8 and 9). Language studies in the FET phase build on the concepts learned previously, ensuring a smoother transition and deeper understanding.
Mathematics Component
Students are required to choose between:
Mathematics
Mathematical Literacy
Mathematics is a foundational subject that equips students with essential problem-solving and analytical skills. It is crucial for those pursuing careers in fields such as Science, Engineering, and Technology. Achieving a minimum average mark of 45% is required to continue with Core Mathematics, which involves complex mathematical concepts and applications.
Mathematical Literacy focuses on practical mathematics skills applicable to everyday life and various professions. It helps students develop competencies in reasoning, problem-solving, and managing resources. This subject is ideal for those who seek to understand and apply mathematical principles in real-world contexts without the depth required in Core Mathematics.
Mathematics: To continue with Core Mathematics, learners must achieve an average mark above 45% in their Mathematics assessments. In August, a learner’s Mathematics average will be calculated based on:
The Mathematics promotion mark obtained in Term 4 of Grade 8
The Mathematics mark from Term 1 of Grade 9
The Mathematics mark from Term 2 of Grade 9
Important Note:
If a learner selects Core Mathematics but falls below the 45% threshold in the November calculation, they will be contacted by the Head of Phase and advised to switch to Mathematical Literacy. This may also necessitate a re-selection of elective subjects.
Conversely, if a learner chooses Mathematical Literacy and improves their Mathematics average to above 45% by November, they will be invited by the Head of Phase to reconsider their subject choices.
In November, the Mathematics average will be recalculated using:
The Mathematics marks from Term 3 of Grade 9
The Mathematics marks for Paper 1 in November
The Mathematics marks for Paper 2 in November
Note: Learners must remain with the subjects selected in August/September if their November Mathematics average does not exceed or fall below the 45% threshold.
