At Jeppe High School for Boys, we understand that educational journeys can evolve, and sometimes changes to subject choices are necessary. Our Subject Change Policy is aligned with the National Protocol on Assessment issued by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), ensuring a structured and transparent process.
Subject changes in Grade 11 and 12 must be avoided, unless absolutely necessary.
Subject changes may only be effected once the school has received the written consent of parents/guardians.
A learner may only change from one subject to another provided that all work in the subject his is dropping is up to date.
General Guidelines
Avoiding Disruptions: Subject changes in Grades 11 and 12 should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Stability in subject choices helps maintain academic progress and ensures a smooth transition towards matriculation.
Parental Consent: Any subject change must be accompanied by written consent from parents or guardians. This ensures that all parties are informed and in agreement with the decision.
Up-to-Date Work: A learner may only switch from one subject to another if all work in the subject being dropped is up to date. This requirement maintains academic integrity and ensures a fair transition.
Grade 10 Subject Changes
Maximum of Two Changes: Learners in Grade 10 may change a maximum of two subjects, subject to the approval of the principal. This flexibility allows learners to adjust their academic focus as they better understand their strengths and interests.
Deadline: The closing date for subject changes will be determined by the School Assessment Coordinator and must be completed no later than one week after the second term reports have been issued. This ensures sufficient time for adjustments and planning.
Grade 11 Subject Changes
Maximum of Two Changes: Learners in Grade 11 may also change up to two subjects, with the principal's approval. The process includes listing the learner’s name, personal particulars, and the old and new subjects for audit purposes.
Documentation Requirements:
Parental Motivation Letter: A letter from parents indicating the reason for the request and the learner’s chosen career path.
Principal’s Support Letter: A letter from the principal either supporting or declining the request, with reasons listed.
Teacher’s Programme Outline: A letter from the new subject teacher outlining the catch-up programme for assessments from previous terms or grades.
Grade 10 Report Cards: Copies of the learner’s Grade 10 report cards.
Deadline: Similar to Grade 10, the deadline for subject changes in Grade 11 is set by the School Assessment Coordinator and must be completed no later than one week after the second term reports have been issued.
District Office Submission: An alphabetical list of learners who applied for subject changes is submitted to the district office the following week.
Finalising Grade 12 Subjects: In November of the Grade 11 year, all candidates must complete Annexure A and Annexure B for the GDE. Only in exceptional circumstances will a learner be allowed to make one subject change before completing these documents, provided no other subject changes were made during the year. These documents finalise each learner’s subjects for Grade 12, and no further changes are permitted once submitted to the GDE.
Grade 12 Subject Changes
No Changes Permitted: Subjects are finalised in November of the previous year. No subject changes are allowed in Grade 12 to ensure consistency and focus in the final year of schooling.
At Jeppe High School for Boys, we aim to support our learners in making informed and strategic decisions about their subject choices. By adhering to this structured policy, we strive to maintain academic excellence and provide a stable and supportive learning environment.
Tips for a Smooth Subject Change Process:
Plan Ahead: Discuss potential subject changes with educators and parents early to avoid last-minute decisions.
Stay Organised: Keep all required documents and reports readily available to ensure a seamless transition.
Seek Guidance: Utilise the resources and support available from teachers and school counselors to make informed choices.
