At Jeppe High School for Boys, we recognise the ambition and dedication of our learners who wish to expand their academic horizons by taking additional subjects. However, it is essential to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to ensure a balanced and manageable workload for our students.
Eligibility and Requirements
Policy Overview: According to GDE policy, learners may only take additional subjects at the matric level if they have written exams in these subjects at both Grade 10 and 11 levels. This means that learners cannot register for additional subjects starting in Grades 11 or 12.
Permission Process: To enroll in an additional subject, a learner must:
Obtain written permission from Mrs. Rattray, Mr. de Boer-Smit and the relevant Head of Department.
Be among the top thirty-five positions in their grade, due to the increased workload associated with additional subjects.
Academic Commitment: Learners must remain diligent in their additional subjects. Failure to submit assessments or participate in tests and examinations will result in automatic deregistration from the additional subject.
How to Apply
Application Steps:
Indicate Interest: Should you meet the abovementioned requirements, an email stating that you want to take an additional subject needs to be sent to the abovementioned staff. Closer to the end, when options and subjects are being finalised, Mrs Rattray and Mr de Boer-Smit will consider all additional subject applications. When typing the email ensure that you identify which subject you would like to take as an additional subject.
Confirmation: As stated above, confirmations of successful applications for additional subjects will be sent out in November/December, after the second round of subject choice applications.
Important Considerations:
Remember, the Admission Point Score (APS) is calculated based on 7 subjects. No extra points are awarded for additional subjects.
Careful planning and time management are crucial to balance the extra workload effectively.
Why Take Additional Subjects?
Expand Your Knowledge: Taking additional subjects allows you to explore new areas of interest, deepen your understanding, and gain a broader educational experience.
Prepare for Future Opportunities: Additional subjects can provide a competitive edge for university applications and future career opportunities, demonstrating your ability to handle a challenging academic load.
Develop Key Skills: Engaging in more subjects helps develop critical skills such as time management, discipline, and intellectual curiosity, which are valuable for lifelong learning.
Commitment to Excellence
At Jeppe High School for Boys, we support and encourage our learners to pursue academic excellence. If you meet the criteria and are prepared for the additional commitment, taking an extra subject can be a rewarding and enriching experience.
Tips for Success:
Stay Organised: Use planners and schedules to keep track of all your subjects and their respective deadlines.
Seek Support: Regularly communicate with your educators and peers for assistance and guidance.
Prioritise Well-Being: Ensure you balance your academic pursuits with extracurricular activities and personal time to maintain overall well-being.
By following these guidelines and making informed decisions, you can make the most of your educational journey at Jeppe High School for Boys.
