As you navigate the subject selection process, please keep the following important considerations in mind. These guidelines will help ensure that you make informed decisions that align with your academic strengths and future aspirations.
Subject Availability: The availability of subjects and subject combinations depends on staffing resources and the number of students opting for each subject. While we strive to offer a broad range of options, some subjects may not be available if insufficient interest is shown or staffing constraints exist.
Eighth Subject Option: Certain subjects, such as Information Technology, Dramatic Arts, Business Studies, Geography and History, may be offered as an additional (eighth) subject. These classes typically take place after school, once a week. Only students with above-average academic performance will be considered, and the subject will only be offered if it is viable in terms of numbers and available teaching staff. Taking an eighth subject requires a strong commitment to independent study, and students must complete all required tests and assignments.
Physical Sciences Considerations: Physical Sciences is recognised as one of the most challenging subjects in the current curriculum. Students need considerable ability and a strong work ethic to succeed. Only those who meet specific criteria will be permitted to take this subject:
Qualification Criteria:
The top-ranked 150 learners in Grade 9 automatically qualify, provided they choose this subject.
Students must have a Mathematics mark of at least 55% and a minimum of 50% in Natural Sciences in Grade 9.
Double Science Option (Physical and Life Sciences): Students choosing both Physical and Life Sciences should be academically strong, with an overall average of at least 70%. This combination is demanding and requires dedication and consistent effort.
Accounting Subject Requirements: Accounting is a rigorous subject that demands a strong understanding of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) and Mathematics. Students must have achieved at least 50% in both subjects in Grade 9 and must demonstrate a solid work ethic.
Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) Requirements: For students interested in EGD, a minimum achievement of 35% in Mathematics in Grade 9 is required. Additionally, students should demonstrate an aptitude for drawing and visualising three-dimensional objects, skills assessed through their performance in Grade 9 Technology: Drawing and related assessments. The EGD teachers are available to assist students in evaluating their suitability for this subject and provide guidance as needed.
Information Technology (IT) Requirements: Students wishing to take Information Technology must achieve at least 60% in Mathematics in Grade 9. Given the nature of the subject, students are expected to spend a minimum of one hour per day practising their programming skills. It is compulsory for students to have daily access to a computer and a printer for completing and submitting assignments.
Computer Applications Technology (CAT) Requirements: Students interested in Computer Applications Technology must be aware of the subject's practical demands. Similar to IT, CAT requires students to practice their skills daily, dedicating at least one hour per day. Therefore, it is essential for students to have daily access to a computer and a printer as well as the required software, as stipulated in the subject overview.
Subject Commitment: We advise students to carefully consider their subject choices, as changes should be minimised over the three-year FET phase. No subject changes will be permitted in Grade 12, ensuring students maintain a stable and focused academic pathway. Any subject changes need to go through the Head of FET Phase and Head of Academics.
These guidelines are designed to help you choose subjects that best suit your abilities and future goals. We encourage you to review this information carefully and consult with teachers and parents as needed. Making well-informed decisions now will pave the way for a successful academic journey and beyond.
