Admission to any of California's 113 community colleges is simple. You will be admitted to the community college of your choice if you meet at least one of the following conditions:
You are 18 years of age or older, with or without a high school diploma
You are a high school graduate
You have the equivalent of a high school diploma
It is easy to understand the California State University admission requirements for California residents. Admission offices at the 23 campuses use three factors to determine eligibility. Most applicants who are admitted meet the standards in each of the following areas:
Specific high school courses (referred to as the "A-G" courses)
Grades in "A-G" courses and test scores
Graduation from high school
GPA of 2.0 or above
Many CSU campuses have higher standards for particular majors or for students who live outside the local admission area. Because of the number of students who apply, several campuses have higher standards (supplementary admission criteria) for all applicants. Many CSU campuses utilize local admission guarantee policies for students who graduate or transfer from high schools and community colleges that are historically served by a CSU campus in that region. You may explore campuses here.
Admission to the University of California is a two-step process:
Requirements: Students must meet the minimum requirements the university has established to ensure incoming students are prepared for university-level work.
Selection: When campuses receive applications from more students than they can admit, as is most often the case, they use factors that go beyond the minimum admission requirements to select students. This process is called comprehensive review.
The Subject Requirement specifies the 15 college-preparatory courses you must complete in high school. These courses are also known as the "A-G" subjects. At least 11 of the 15 required courses must be completed prior to the senior year.
For students enrolled in high schools in California, the courses you take to fulfill the Subject Requirement must be certified by the University of California as meeting the requirement and must be included on your school's UC-certified course list. More details about the subject requirements. The minimum GPA is 3.0 for California applicants
California's nonprofit, independent colleges and universities are often referred to as "private." Nonprofit, independent colleges and universities are not state-supported, unlike the University of California, California State University, or California Community College systems.
California is home to more than 75 unique nonprofit, independent colleges and universities. They focus on the individual student. Because each nonprofit, independent college and university is unique, admission requirements vary. Applicants for admission are evaluated for past achievement, future promise, and "fit" with the schools' missions and goals. All applications are treated as individuals and are personally evaluated.
Generally, admission requirements at nonprofit, independent colleges and universities fall into four categories: (1) schools with admission requirements similar to the University of California; (2) schools with admission requirements similar to the California State University system; (3) schools that accept only the top students in the world; and (4) schools with very specific requirements, in addition to a well-rounded curriculum, related to their specialty - for example, in the visual or performing arts.
