Step-Up Instrument Recommendations

Flute

Brand:  Yamaha

Model:  YFL281S (open hole with case and cleaning rod)

Required accessories:

• Flute Silk cleaning swab (for inside of flute)

• Flute Microfiber cloth (for outside of flute)

• Wire Music Stand: This helps ensure proper playing technique while practicing at home.

• Digital Metronome/Tuner- Korg TM60, T50, or TM40

• Korg Microphone Pick-up CM-300

Other recommended accessories:

• Hercules or K&M Flute Stand: to hold the flute while you are not playing and helps prevent damage.

Oboe

The school provides this instrument for a rental/maintenance fee of $50.00 a school year. This payment will be made to Eastern High School at the start of the school year during the month of August.  

Required accessories:

(Additional reeds will need to be purchased throughout the year)

• Oboe silk swab (Jones or Hodges brand works well)

• Oboe reed case (holds 4 reeds, ribbon style, not peg)

• 4 Medium-Soft oboe reeds* (Recommended reed brand is: Bocal Majority)

• Thumb-Eez brand thumb guard

• Reed soaking cup with lid

*A Note about Reeds: Three oboe reeds will be needed to start the year. They will be purchased from school through our oboe teacher or Bocal Majority brand reeds from a music store.  Reeds will be a continual purchase throughout the school year of at least three per six weeks.  This may need to be adjusted due to reeds cracking/breaking.  The rule is to ALWAYS have three working reeds!

Bassoon

The school provides this instrument for a rental/maintenance fee of $50.00 a school year. This payment will be made to Eastern High School at the start of the school year during the month of August.

Clarinets are arguably the most difficult instruments to get to sound identical to each other in a band setting. Because of this major factor, it is absolutely essential that ANY VARIATION of instrument or mouthpiece choice must be made of wood and approved by the band directors BEFORE the rental or purchase of an instrument. Plastic just cannot produce the correct sound for a child’s success in concert/solo setting but is great for Marching Band.

• Clarinet reed guard (holds and protects 4 reeds to help them last longer)

• Box of Vandoren Blue Box 3/3.5 strength reeds

• Silk clarinet drop swab (cleans the inside of the instrument after each use)
