(IX) CRITERION

To be outstanding examples representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals.

An Example:

An outstanding feature is

the preponderance of ‘megaherbs’ within the plant biodiversity.

These large herbs are considered to display unique evolutionary adaptation to the distinctive sub-antarctic climate.

(X) CRITERION

To contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.

An Example:

Auckland Island:

There is a high regard for natural protection, and they are some of the most unmodified island of the world.

They are surrounded by a marine reserve.

There is an abundance of pelagic seabirds and penguins that utilise the island for breeding.

The integrity of the marine resources is an important issue for the islands’ property.

Tourist impact:

  • In recent years, the number of small vessels, such as yachts and sail boats, has increased.

  • The Conservation Management Strategy monitors visitors to determine his effects on the environment.

How to get there:

  • Generally by or with the support of, a boat.

Companies:

  • Heritage Expedition,
  • Orion Expedition.
