About the location

How to get there

  • If you like to drive, go from Darwin on the Stuart Highway then the Arnhem Highway. For those without personal transport you can hire a vehicle or a motor in Darwin. The journey takes about three hours.
  • Airports are in Darwin and Alice Springs, from there, you can hire a vehicle or jump on a tour to get to the park. If you’re travelling from overseas, you may need to fly into one of the major cities first and then take another flight to Darwin or Alice Springs.


The criteria for the inclusion of this site in the list

CRITERION (I)

Definition: “to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius.

Explanation: Kakadu’s art sites represent a unique artistic achievement because of the wide range of styles used, the large number of sites and the detailed depiction of a wide range of human figures and animal species.


CRITERION (VI)

Definition: to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.

Explanation: The rock art and archaeological record is an exceptional source of evidence for social and ritual activities associated with hunting and gathering traditions of Aboriginal people from the Pleistocene era until the present day.


CRITERION (VII)

Definition: to contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance.


Explanation: Kakadu National Park is a vast expanse of wetlands to the north of the park. The plateau areas behind the escarpment are inaccessible by vehicle and contain large areas with no human infrastructure and limited public access.


CRITERION (IX)

Definition: to be outstanding examples representing significant ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals.


Explanation: Kakadu’s stone country is two billion years old whereas the floodplains are recent. The park provides an unique opportunity to look into evolutionary processes in an intact landscape.


CRITERION (X)

Definition: to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.


Explanation: The park has one of the widest ranges of habitats and greatest number of species documented of any comparable area in tropical northern Australia.


This lodge rests in an extremely special part of Kakadu National Park known as Cannon Hill. It boasts of comfortable tented cabins with en-suite facilities.

Kakadu and tourism

  • Kakadu National Park won the prize for Major Tourist Attraction at the 2017 Australian Tourism Awards;
  • As a result of its World Heritage inscription, there was a significant increase in visitation;
  • In the last 30 years tourism has brought millions of visitors to the park, and now we have to protect and manage its natural and cultural heritage.

Drawbacks of tourism on the site

  • The increasing tourist numbers are placing areas of the park under environmental pressure;
  • Important activities to the economies of the Northern Territory of Australia may create conflicts with aboriginal people.
  • Traditional aboriginal people see visitor as a threat, and tourists need to ensure that their behavior is respectful to them.

  • Visiting waterfall sites, such as Jim Jim and Twin Falls, and the areas of Nourlangie and Yellow Water .
