WHERE?

Situated at the heart of Singapore, the site demonstrates the evolution of a British tropical colonial botanic garden that has become a modern world-class scientific institution used for both conservation and education.

It has been an important centre for science, research and plant conservation.

The Gardens

Singapore's botanic gardens are the only one in the world that open from 5am to midnight every day of the year.

More than 10,000 species of flora are spread over the 82-hectares area.

Small tropical rainforest, one of the few pieces of original jungle left on the island. Perfect location to spot colourful birds and insects.

Ginger and orchid garden.

The Gardens has been developed along a Four-Core Concept. The four cores are Tanglin, which is the heritage core retaining the old favourites and charms of the historic Gardens, Central, the tourist belt of the Gardens, Bukit Timah the educational and discovery zone and Tyersall-Gallop, created with the opening in 2017 of the Learning Forest which is designed to integrate with the Gardens' existing rain forest to form an enlarged forest habitat.

UNESCO HERITAGE SITE

It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee on 4 July 2015.

The Gardens are the first and only tropical botanic garden on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

It is the first in Asia and the third botanic garden inscribed in the world following Orto botanico di Padova and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Important role in fostering agricultural development in Singapore and the region through collecting, growing, experimenting and distributing potentially useful plants

CRITERION II

to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design

The Singapore Botanic Gardens has been a centre for plant research in Southeast Asia since the 19th century, contributing significantly to the expansion of plantation rubber in the 20th century, and continues to play a leading role in the exchange of ideas, knowledge and expertise in tropical botany and horticultural sciences.

CRITERION IV

to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is an outstanding example of a British tropical colonial botanic garden, and is notable for its preserved landscape design and continuity of purpose since its inception

“It was extraordinary, one of the longest salutations I've heard ... and every single member of the committee had something important to say and some had a lot to say in favour of the inscription.”

-Dr Nigel Taylor

IMPACT ON TOURISM AND INDUSTRY

Since the Gardens obtained its Unesco World Heritage Site status, they have seen a 35 per cent rise in the number of visitors.

Visited by 4.4 million people each year (Singapore's entire population numbers 5.5 million) the Singapore Botanic Gardens may just be Asia's most fascinating garden.

This created a huge rubber production industry across the region, which was partly responsible for the industrialization of Asia

Singapore to this day is also one of the world's top centers for commercial orchid growing, with orchid hybridization pioneered in these gardens.

The Botanic Gardens have been ranked Asia's top park attraction since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards.

Declared Garden of the Year at the International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012.

Michelin three-star rating in 2008.
