IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES

IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES FOR NEW TEACHERS

EU and Schengen Area Passport Holders

Immigration procedures for EU teachers are quite straightforward. No particular requirement needed, but a copy of a valid passport, copies of degrees and teaching certifications (these might, occasionally, according to school needs, need to be translated and legalised by the Italian Consulate of competence for the country where the degrees where issued).

Codice Fiscale (Italian Tax Identification Number): Please make contact with the nearest Italian consulate and get a codice fiscale. This should be done well in advance before your arrival ( possibl 6 to 12 weeks before).

UK CITIZENS: From January 2021 UK citizens willing to move to Italy for work purposes will have to undergo the same visa application process as all other non EU citizens (see-below).

Non - EU Passport Holders

All non-EU teachers will have to obtain a work visa to enter Italy for work purposes. This is a long process and sometimes stressful - nothing is simple or quickly done in Italy, as far as paperwork is involved- but if started in advance, can be done in time for the move.

The steps of this process are:

  1. LEGALISATION OF DEGREES AND TEACHING CERTIFICATES

  2. OBTAINING OF A “NULLA OSTA” (clearance from Italian immigration authorities to proceed with the hiring)

  3. GETTING A WORK VISA to enter Italy

  4. ARRIVAL IN ITALY

  1. LEGALISATION OF DEGREES AND TEACHING CERTIFICATES

All non-EU teachers will need to have their Bachelor’s (and Master’s, if applicable) degrees, along with relevant transcripts, apostilled, translated by an certified translator, then legalised by the Italian consulate. For detailed information about this process it is essential that you get in touch with the nearest Italian consulate , and check with them what the procedure is and what documents they require, as sometimes different countries request different documents.

OBTAINING A “NULLA OSTA”

The Nulla Osta is the document the Police and Immigration authorities issue after checking your paperwork, to authorise IST to hire you, and you to request a work visa (at this stage you will need to let us know for sure where you will be in mid August, when you will leave to move to Italy. It will need to be either your current country of residence, if that is where you will be leaving from, or your country of permanent residence, if you are moving back there as a permanent resident before you come to Italy. You will need to find out what the Italian consulate of competence for this state or country is, as this will be the consulate where the official request for your work visa will be sent by the Italian authorities, and where you will need to apply for your visa).

Once you have all of your documents ready you will need to send everything (original degrees, transcripts, apostilles, legalized documents and translations and, along with copies of everything, and a copy of all pages of your passports) to IST, to Valeria Cocchi’s attention.

At this point, IST will make an appointment with the immigration authorities to have your nulla osta issued.

Once your nulla osta is issued, it will be electronically sent to the Italian consulate of relevance for your residency or permanent residency address, and we will send it to you by express courier.

PLEASE NOTE:

At this stage, we will also make a reservation at a hotel or self catering temporary accommodation for the first two weeks after your arrival, and that will be the official address where you will be staying after your arrival in Italy. It needs to be a registered and officially approved accommodation for immigration purposes.

GETTING A WORK VISA

Once you have received your nulla osta, you can book an appointment to apply for your work visa. Please do not wait until the last moment to book, as sometimes it can take up to three months before you can get an appointment for a visa application.

Make sure you are give a work visa with multiple entrances.

As soon as you have your visa in your hands, please send us a copy by email.

ARRIVING IN ITALY

Once you have obtained your work visa, you arrival in Italy will need to be scheduled either within the first week of July or for the week-end before school re-opens in August.

Mid July - end of August is the Italian summer break, when 99% of Italian public offices and firms close for their summer holiday or, if open, work at very reduced ranks. IST staff will have their summer break during this period as well.

After your arrival, you will have 8 days to begin your inland immigration procedure, which entails a lot of paperwork signing and queueing in public administration offices. The process normally takes up to 3 months before it is completed, but in this case you will have a member of IST staff guiding through it and accompanying you to appointments and procedures.
