Here, at Indian River, we take pride in our Physical Education program. We provide a positive learning environment for all students. In order for this to happen, we have listed expectations for your student. We require each student and their parents/guardians to familiarize themselves with our expectations to ensure their success. We hope to teach these students not only how to live a healthy lifestyle, but how to utilize life skills they will need beyond their high school years. To aid in your student’s success, please read the following policies and procedures we have listed for you. Thank you for your support! We are looking forward to a great school year.
Arrival and Departure
Students will report directly to their class location and leave their backpack or personal belongings in the hallway before entering the class location.
Student’s must be on time for class
When leaving class, students must wait for bell before departure to next class or disciplinary action could be taken.
Tardiness
Students are expected to be in class ON TIME
If student does not have a pass from a teacher and they are late to class, that is considered tardy and you could be subject to disciplinary action or reduction of daily grade based on missing information or activity time.
*Locker Room
THERE WILL BE NO LOCKER ROOM USE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY.
The Locker Room is open for athletes ONLY before homeroom. If you are not on a sports team and are in there, you will be asked to leave. The locker room will remain locked ALL day and you cannot access your locker until after school at 2:15.
Preparation for class
We will NOT be changing for PE
SNEAKERS ARE REQUIRED FOR CLASS, except for the mindfulness unit.
However,
Proper attire must be worn during class to be able to properly and safely complete all tasks and objectives (so plan outfits accordingly)
*Attendance and Make-ups
In New York State, Physical Education is state-mandated and required by law.
ALL ABSENCES MUST BE MADE UP BY THE END OF THE QUARTER TO RECEIVE CREDIT. Any make up classes past the deadline will NOT be accepted. Your teacher will discuss policies for make-ups in their own classes.
A grade of “0” will be given for all classes that are not made up at the end of the quarter
Please talk to your assigned teacher for individual make-up policies
*Grading policy
Students will receive a numerical grade at the end of each 10-week marking period
Grading is based on completion of daily objectives 90% and assessments 10%
Daily grading is based on 5 points: 2 Objectives, 2 Effort/Attitude, 1 Safety
*Cell Phone Use
Our area is "YELLOW" zone
Cell phone use is only permitted with teacher permission
Cell phone use is typically for use when a chromebook has died and a student needs a device to complete a lesson, or for listening to music during our fitness units
Cell phone use for taking pictures, making phone calls or engaging in social media during class time is strictly PROHIBITED! If a student makes these choices, disciplinary action will be taken and the cell phone will no longer be allowed in physical education.
*Medical Restrictions
If your student is injured and has a medical note, PLEASE ask the doctor to list what activities the student CAN do during Physical Education. This will alleviate them from having to make up classes or do the alternate assessments. [For Example, Student has a broken wrist. The doctor can say they can walk around the track, or can ONLY do lower body exercises in the weight room.] We will base their daily grade on their participation in that specific activity exclusive to their medical note.
For students who have medical restrictions, we will have electronic assignments on our google classroom that coincide with our daily lessons. They will complete the assignment related to those classes missed. These make-ups will allow them to stay up to date with daily grades. Your grade for physical education will be determined by how well you do on those assignments.
