GLOBAL THEME: This term Year 4 will explore the themes of identify and diversity.
This half term we will be studying the core text of 'The Goldfish Boy'. A book about a boy who suffers with an obsessive compulsive disorder and spends days and weeks in his room, spying on his neighbours and cleaning excessively. The children will produce a narrative using cohesion and pronouns as well as a newspaper report, focusing on the tense.
This half term the children will continue to focus on answering the question "Why are places of worship important to the community?"
The children will explore the features of places of worship for Hindus (Mandir) and Sikhs (Gurdwara). They will also look at the roles of different religious leaders, including a priest (Christianity), Imam (Islam) and Rabbi (Judaism).
Year 4 will explore shape and angles this half term as well as position and direction. They will look at tessellation of shapes and plotting positions of shapes onto a graph using coordinates. The children will draw 2-D shapes on a grid and interpret charts.
During outdoor PE this half term, Year 4 will be taking part in athletics sessions in preparation for Sports Day, with an emphasis on running races. The teaching will focus on the children's running techniques and agility.
Indoor PE will focus on developing and applying their ball chasing and fitness through skill development sessions, healthy competition, cooperative games and trying to beat their personal best.
In the summer half term, Year 4 will be further focussing on animals including humans, with an emphasise on the animals and will looki at consumers, producers and the food chain and how it work, as well as how a food chain can vary in different habitats.
Economic well being - Year 4 will be exploring choices associated with looking after money, what makes something good value for money, stereotypes in the workplace, career changes and what influences career choices.
A transition lesson will also be used to aid a smooth movement of year groups from Year 4 to Year 5.
Year 4 will study geography this half term and will be learning all about volcanoes. They will be describing and understanding the key features of natural disasters and will learn that a volcano is a mountain that has a crater, lava and magma that rises through cracks in the Earth's crust.
Copyright and ownership - the children will be recognising who might own online content and if we can re-use it.
This half term we are lucky enough to have a whole week of food technology, where we will make halloumi and vegetable kebabs.
We will be studying art and experimenting with materials and being able to express our likes and dislikes of the colours and textures that we find.
The children will be creating an abstract collage in the style of Valentina Brostean.
In French the children will be learning all about the Romans. They will learn and recall a range of core vocabulary related to key Roman figures, gods and goddesses, famous Roman inventions and make comparisons between the life of a rich and poor Roman child.
In music this half term, Year 4 will be learning to reflect, rewind and replay to sounds of Abba's 'Dancing Queen'. They will listen and appraise the song, and build up to learning the song, verse by verse.
