GLOBAL THEME: This term Year 5 will explore the themes of social justice and equity. We will be focussing on the topic of the Tudors.
Welcome to Year 5 Pine class. We hope you had a relaxing and fun summer holiday and you are now ready to take on new challenges in Year 5. We have planned lots of exciting learning for this half term and will continue to learn in a happy and safe environment.
This half term, our core book is ‘The Boy and the Globe’ by Tony Bradman, a story set in early seventeenth century London where young orphan Toby Cuffe is living on the streets where life is hard. When Toby stumbles into the Globe and meets William Shakespeare, the boy's energy and enthusiasm remind Shakespeare of the magic that first inspired his love of the theatre, and the two set to work on a new entertainment for Twelfth Night. As an outcome the children will be writing character descriptions as well as an informal letter linked to the Tudor period.
Children will continue to develop their reading and comprehension skills by making predictions based on visual images and the text, inferring and clarifying their understanding of words and phrases in order to develop their vocabulary. They will make links with real events happening in the world around us and continue to develop learning behaviours such as supporting and actively listening to each other.
This term the pupils will be exploring the the theme 'Why should we care for our world?' Within this theme, they will learn the different ways communities care for the world. They will first learn how the Earth is being damaged by people and then discuss how do people from different religious communities care for their local environment to mitigate the damage. They will explore the importance of stewardship and caring for the environment through from the perspective of different religions.
In maths, the children will consolidate their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction. They will learn to read and write numbers up to one million, in words and digits. Rounding whole numbers and decimals will help the children to estimate answers to check their calculations. Counting forward and backwards in whole numbers and numbers to three decimal places will help develop understanding of place value. There will also be a focus on mental calculation strategies. Ensuring your child is fluent with their times tables up to 12 x 12 will be beneficial. The vocabulary associated with place value will be emphasized and there will be opportunities to apply what they have learnt on a daily basis through reasoning and problem-solving activities.
There will be a focus on flag football in outdoor PE. Indoor PE will be building on their ball skills and agility.
Children will build on their knowledge of Animals including Humans. They will identify the key stages in the life cycles of different animals and plants. The children will also learn that the gestation period varies among different animals.
‘Being me in my world’ is the theme for this half term. This involves respect for rules, rights and responsibilities as well as respecting other people’s differences.
This half term the pupils will be learning about The Tudors including contributions made by black Tudors in society. Pupils will explore the impact of King Henry VIII's actions on society. They will learn about this through exploring artefacts and historical resources to learn about King Henry VIII's six wives and the changes made to the religious worship and monasteries in England, Ireland and Wales. Pupils will also explore timelines through the Tudor royal family tree.
This half term, the children will be covering e-safety and identifying and reporting online bullying as well as the exploration of technology in our lives through learning about systems, networks and devices.
The children will be investigating artwork created by Venus Artist as inspired by Andy Warhol. They will be developing their sketching techniques for a portrait. Using a variety of acrylic paints they will be exploring: colour mixing, blending, washes, dry brush and sgraffito (scratching) techniques. They will then use some of these techniques to create their own portraits on newspaper, in the style of the artist.
The children will be revising greetings, colours and numbers. They will move on to learning about the date and days of the week.
PE Kit
Please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school on Thursdays and Fridays. Having all PE items clearly labelled, with their full name will help reduce the need to replace lost items.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school so they have easy access to water throughout the school day.
Reading Records
Reading Records will be checked every morning. We expect pupils to read for 20-30 minutes every evening. Please date and sign the appropriate box in your child's reading record once your child has completed their daily reading.
