GLOBAL THEME: This term Year 4 will explore the themes of power and governance.
In English, our core book for this half term is ‘The Accidental Prime Minister by Tom McLaughlin. The story is about a boy’s unexpected rise to power. When Joe tells a local news reporter exactly what he would do if he were leader of the country, the video goes viral and Joe’s speech becomes famous all over the world!
Children will discuss the traits of a good leader and write their own character description describing their personality traits. They will then plan, draft, edit and publish a manifesto describing why they would make a good Prime Minister, ensuring they include structural and language features to engage the reader.
In reading, children will develop learning behaviours such as supporting and actively listening to each other. They will read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and focus on reading skills including evaluating, inferencing, making connections, summarising, predicting, and clarifying their understanding of words and phrases.
Throughout the term children will will be reflecting on the importance of rules within society and the significance of guidelines within different religious communities including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Hinduism.
During this half term, children will be developing their knowledge of place value of numbers including decimals. They will use partitioning to explore the composition of numbers and will learn about negative numbers and Roman numerals. They will also order and compare numbers and decimals, and round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Children will learn the vocabulary associated with place value and apply what they have learnt through reasoning and problem-solving activities.
Our PE sessions will be taught by the sports coach. This term the children will be developing their hockey skills with a focus on passing, moving and travelling with a ball.
In science, we will be learning about living things and their habitats. Firstly, children will look at the different habitats of living things and how they have adapted to live in particular habitats. They will also use secondary resources to research how seasons and humans can impact the habitats of animals. Then they will sort living things in a variety of ways and explore how to use classification keys to identify a variety of living things. Finally, they will demonstrate their knowledge of classification keys by creating their own classification key and present their findings to an audience.
During Autumn 1, we will be looking at the topic ‘Families and Relationships’. Children will learn about boundaries in friendships and understand how what they say and do can affect other people. They will understand the impact of bullying and the responsibility of bystanders to help. They will also look at stereotypes relating to gender and disability.
This half term, children will be learning about Sri Lanka and the UK. The children will learn and use map skills to locate both countries on a map, in atlases and the globe. They will research physical and human features on a map and use identify their understanding to find these features in Sri Lanka. They will research and describe the impact of physical geography in the context of Sri Lanka. They will research and describe the geographical similarities and differences between the UK and Sri Lanka.
In computing, children will be learning how networks physically connect to other networks and will understand what the parts of a network are and how they connect to each other to form the internet. They will also explore what can be shared on the World Wide Web and how content can be added and accessed. Finally, they will explore who owns the content on the World Wide Web and evaluate the consequences of unreliable content.
This term children will create a landscape using mixed media in the style of the artist Jill Pelto, who incorporates graphs in her artwork that represent data on climate change. Children will explore different shading and water colour techniques and use a variety of mixed media including biro, wax crayons and watercolours to create their own landscape artwork.
This term, children will be learning how to read, write and say colours and numbers 31-60 in French. They will also be able to say who their family members are and describe their own appearance.
PE Kit
Children will have PE every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child wears their kit to school on this day and that all items are clearly labelled with their full name.
