GLOBAL THEME: This term Year 1 will continue to explore the theme of sustainable development.
This half term, the children will be using two core texts - 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' and 'Tidy' for their English lessons. These texts are closely linked to the deplorable plastic pollution in the oceans, the impacts on both marine life, humans and what we as stewards of the earth can do to alleviate or minimise the problem. Awareness of plastic pollution in the oceans will be highlighted in the children. They will learn about the facts of plastic pollution in the ocean and their responsibilities in the context of the problem.
In religious education (R E), the children will learn about their homes and the home is an important in relation where they belong. The home is where they belong. They will learn about the humanist and what they do to find belonging, like naming ceremonies, humanist weddings and meeting at public places to talk. They will learn about the Jewish people and understand why Friday nights are important in a Jewish home and also learn about ways Muslims show the importance of Allah. They will find facts about Hindus and how they worship at home and understand the beliefs and practices of Christians. They will learn about customs and they affect our daily lives.
Phonics is extremely important and lessons in phonics cannot ne be stressed enough. It gives the children the opportunity to learn the sounds of letters to read. They are able to transfer the skill and knowledge of reading to write and be successfully. Currently, the children are receiving two phonics lessons daily in preparation towards the national phonics screening. It is important that children arrive early prepared to take part in the lessons.
Art this term will focus sculpture and explore recycled sculpture art. To do this, they will identify and sort materials by texture, lines and shapes. The children will experiment making 3D objects with different materials and create a 3D sculpture in pairs. They will evaluate their sculptures and ways to improve them for next time.
This term, the children will extend their knowledge of place value from 50 to 100. They will learn how to partition 2-digit numbers and use concrete objects to represent the numbers. They will be taught positions and directions and how to describe these using vocabulary such as left, right, above, below, forwards and backwards movement. They will learn about money and time. The lessons on money will focus on recognising the coins and banknotes in UK, and making different amounts using a combination of coins and banknotes. The lessons on time will focus on telling the time using o'clock, half past, half to, quarter past and quarter to.
In physical education this term, the lessons and activities will focus on athletics and outdoor games. These activities would give the children the opportunity to use the knowledge and skills gained in the previous terms to build their stamina for the activities in athletics and games.
In science , the will recall the four seasons in the UK and the months each season occur as well as the activities in each season and the clothes to wear. The children will identify different weather conditions in the four seasons in the UK and learn that summer has the longest day and highest temperature. They will be taught ways to stay and healthy in the summer sun. They will compare weather in UK to other countries in the world and gather data and make observations about the weather during the summer.
In computing this term, the children will learn the meaning technology. They identify and understand the power of technology inside and outside the school. They will be able to identify technology outside the school, the local community and give examples of some technology at home and explain how they work.
History this half term will focus identifying in the past and the present. The children will be looking at past and present events of the local community. They will describe things that happened to themselves and other people in the past. They will order a set of events on when they occur and group objects based on their similarities and differences in the past and in the present. They will identify and recall some facts and key events about our and understand how a location has changed over time.
In PSHE, the children will learn to understand that different strengths and interests are needed to do different jobs. They will to identify matters that are important to self and others, and know about people whose jobs are to help us in the community. They will explore different jobs and the work people do and relate this to the school community. They will learn about different people in the school and the job they do to help with their learning. They will learn to identify their strengths in preparation for year 2.
In music, the children will be applying the knowledge and skills they acquired in their music lessons during spring terms to learn and perform various songs in our music lessons.
