GLOBAL THEME: This half term, as part of our focus on the global theme of sustainability, pupils will continue to learn about the significance of sustainability through the topics of Geography, Science, Whole Class Reading and English. We will receive a visitor to learn more about the work of environmentalists in supporting sustainability this term.
This half term, our core book is ‘Floodlands’ by Marcus Sedgewick. The children will continue to develop their reading and comprehension skills by making predictions based on visual images from the text, as well as inferring and clarifying their understanding of words and phrases. Connections will be made with other texts we have read during the year. They will continue to develop learning behaviours such as supporting and actively listening to build on comments made by each other. In writing, they will focus on a narrative related to the core text, ensuring that they include all of the structural and language features they have learnt throughout the year. They will also be writing a persuasive speech about making changes related to sources of energy and how they are used
This term in RE, pupils will look further into pilgrimage and will create a Power Point Slideshow with in-depth information, focussing also on what we can learn from each of the religions covered throughout the year.
In maths, the children will be focussing on angles in shape by calculating angles around a point as well as on a straight line. They will also be building on their knowledge of 3D shapes by recognising their properties and using the correct vocabulary to describe them. In the next unit, children will be using coordinates to translate and reflect shapes across an axis. We will finish the year by converting between different units of measure. There will also be a focus on mental calculation strategies. Ensuring your child is fluent with their times tables up to 12 x 12 would be very helpful. There will be opportunities to apply what they have learnt on a daily basis through reasoning and problem-solving activities.
Year 5 will continue to visit the Royal Russell School Swimming pool for Swimming lessons each Monday.
The pupils will receive a second PE lesson with a PE coach every Thursday.
Please ensure your child has the correct uniform required for both these days,. with a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Children will build on their knowledge of animals including humans. The children will be examining the different stages of human development from pregnancy to old age. Children will plot these on a human timeline - looking at the most significant changes at each stage. They will be learning about the need for a healthy lifestyle while pregnant and the gestational periods of a range of animals will also be compared.

Living in the wider world will be the overall focus. Identifying when situations become unsafe and how to cope in these situations will be explored along with basic first aid. Understanding the importance of looking after physical and emotional wellbeing during puberty will be examined along with the physical changes that happen. Awareness of FGM and the laws prohibiting it will be discussed. Links to computing will be made about how to be a responsible digital citizen.

This term in history, pupils will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and what Britain was such a desirable place to invade and conquer. Pupils will explore the impact the Viking invasion had on the Anglo-Saxon community. Children will take on roles as either an Anglo-Saxon villager or a Viking invader to immerse themselves in debate..
This term pupils will explore copyright, by assessing where it is suitable to share the work of others. They will learn about how to search the internet for content which is permitted to be reused and shared.
Pupils will also work on creating quizzes using selection. They will explore outcomes, create questions, test and evaluate their quizzes.
This term, pupils have designed, created and evaluated pizzas as part of DT week. Pupils worked on making pizza dough from scratch. They chose their toppings and thoroughly enjoyed cooking and sharing their outcomes.
In Art, pupils have been learning about the South African artist Esther Mahlangu who is famous for creating geometric prints inspired by bold traditional tribal designs.
Through learning about the Vikings and Anglo Saxons in French, immersing in this cross-curricular topic and delving into this period of history, pupils will be taught the skills to describe themselves. They will do this as a character from the Viking period, exploring the vocabulary, adjectives and grammar involved in character and physical descriptions, allowing pupils to describe themselves and also another person by the end of the unit.
In music this term, the topic is refelct, rewind and replay. Pupils will be singing Lean on Me by Bill Withers, Dancing in the Street, Livin' on a Prayer and Blackbird by the Beatles.
Weekly swimming lessons will continue on Mondays
