GLOBAL THEME: This term Year 1 will continue to explore the themes of sustainable development.
This term we will focus on two distinctive core texts - 'The Secret Garden by Linda Sarah and Greenpeace by Simon James. The first text is about a girl called Funni, who turned an old and disused car park near an airport into a sparkle corridor of colourful flowers that can be seen from the air by passengers in the planes. In the second text the chn would write letters to Greenpeace and research about how to take care of gorilla. The second core text fits in well with our global theme for this term - sustainable development.
This term, our focus in RE would be on different religions and identify celebrations that we celebrate. The chn will learn about Muslim celebrations, how it is celebrated (The 9th month of the Muslim calendar, observed by fasting, followed by festival of Eid-ul-Fitr) and its significance. The chn will learn and explain why Darwin day is important to Humanists, and draw links in the Humanist and Darwin's Theory. The chn will learn about some important celebrations for people of Jewish faith - Hanukkah and Purim. They will listen to the story of Raksha Bandhan and explain the importance of the Hindu tradition of Rakhi.
Year 1 will continue with daily phonics in the morning at 09:50 prompt and it is imperative that the children are in school well before that time to fully benefit from the lessons. It must be noted that, the phonic lessons help the children with their reading, writing and speaking confidently. In addition, they would be assessed in phonics in June and we expect them to pass, and that depends on consistent engagement in all phonics lessons, meaning they must be present in the lesson and on time.
This term, Year 1 would focus on weaving by investigating and try simple weaving colourful to create a loom, warp and weft. The children would learn to understand and investigate properties of sustainable materials to weave a blanket for a whale. They would evaluate a range of weaving techniques and design a simple woven blanket. The children would use their designs to weave a blanket and then evaluate their finished products.
This term in maths, the children will continue with heights and lengths, and proceed with mass and volume of objects. They will also learn their 2, 5 and 10 times table by counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. They will be introduced to division through equal sharing and grouping. They will be introduced to fractions and learn what a half, a quarter, three quarters, one whole are and how they look like. They will investigate how to make and find these fractions in shapes and objects. They will learn how to describe directions and positions using the vocabulary: forwards, backwards, left, right, above and below. Place value will be extended from 50 to 100. They would be introduced to the basic concepts of money and time.
This term in PE, the children would learn the correct running posture to travel short distances and use a variety of different skills to travel short distances. The children would learn about different ways to take off to to travel short distances. They would also learn how to jump forwards, backwards and sideways using different combinations. They would learn to use a variety of different passes and hit stationary targets from different distances. They develop the awareness of distances and weight in a game.
In science this term, year 1 would focus on plants and their features. They would investigate what plants need to grow and understand that are plants are grown and not made. The children will also learn about the life cycle of a plant. They would investigate different types plants and understand that a tree is a type of plant, but there are differences between a plant and a tree . Finally, they would learn how to group plants by observing the similarities and differences in them.
This term ICT, the children will be learning how to draw and create images to make animated story board using a familiar text. They will be using tools on purple mash to create their storyboard.
The children would recall the countries in the UK and their capital cities. They would learn about urban and rural areas and identify their features. They would compare and contrast features of rural and urban areas to know and understand what a rural and urban areas look like. They would use the knowledge about the features they have learnt about rural and urban areas to describe their locality. They would learn about pollution and identify types of pollution and their impacts in an area.
This term in PSHE, the children would learn about how to behave online so that others are not upset. They would learn to recognise people online who could make someone sad, upset and embarrassed. The children would identify and understand the need to be considerate and kind online, and ask for permission to do something online. They would learn to understand that people find different things funny and that it is okay to like and dislike something. The children would take a quiz about all the things they learnt about online safety to find out what they have retained and how they understood the lessons.
This term in music, the children would learn and perform a variety songs and use the skills they learnt from last term to do this. They would incorporate beat, pitch, rhythm to sing and perform the songs.
PE lesson every Tuesday and Friday
Reading books are changed every Tuesday and Thursday.
Children need to bring reading book to school everyday to be read with.
Morning reading with your child every Friday 8:35-8:50 am.
