education abroad program types
Exchange Programs
Exchange Programs are bi-lateral exchange programs where Illinois students take all of their courses through the exchange partner.
Direct Enroll Programs
Direct Enroll Programs: Illinois students enroll directly as non-degree seeking international students at a partner institution.
Provider Programs
Provider Programs: Providers are organizations (colleges or universities, nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses, or consortiums) that offer education abroad programs and services to students from a variety of institutions.
By Petition Programs
LAS students may petition through the college to participate in and receive credit for a study abroad program that is not currently approved by the University of Illinois. Students must demonstrate that the program meets a curricular need not offered by existing programs.
Examples of recently approved programs include:
University of Michigan Research Semester at CERN (physics)
Math in Moscow (mathematics)
Petition Process
Students must start the petition process by:
schedule an advising appointment with LAS International Programs Assistant Dean
complete a non-approved study abroad petition form and course approval form. NOTE: all or most courses must be pre-approved by the articulating unit.
LAS then:
sends petition program information to International Safety & Security (ISS) for health and safety review and feedback
sends petition to Executive Assistant Dean Robert Steltman for College review and approval
LASIP then notifies student either way.
If not approved, LASIP will schedule follow-up advising appointment with the student to discuss alternatives.
If approved, LASIP will create an application in TDS and ask the student to complete the application by a deadline
