Being satisfied, we ended the daytrip visiting a very peculiar place: the Nubia salt pans, a perfect integration of natural resources, sustainability and wildlife. There, where flamingos and herons feed and nest, we were told the story of one of the very few salt pans in Europe, where the precious substance is taken from the sea by evaporation after undergoing a production process in shiny, natural, sea-water filled pink pools (the pink comes from tiny shrimps flamingos feed on). The nice and competent owner’s daughter, welcoming us inside the small windmill with museum, explained everything there was to know, from the ancient techniques and tools to the hard working day of a salt worker, keeping us interested till the last word. The view surrounding the windmill completed the story, not needing any further description.
