Boynton and Dewitt Middle Schools have both added courses on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are working on understanding the elements of AI, biases in AI, and machine learning through creative, relevant projects. For more information on the curriculum specifics, check out MIT's DAILY AI.

Students as Partners and Leaders within the CS Collaborative

Students became the majority population in the meetings in the second half of the 22-23 school year for the CS Collaborative, a group with the goal of bringing our mission statement to fruition, to expand access to high-quality, equitable computer science learning experiences for all students.

1:1 Micro:bit Pilot

Students in participating 4th grade classrooms will receive a BBC micro:bit, allowing them to practice problem solving using computational thinking and  deepen their understanding of key programming concepts & physical computing. By giving each student their own device, and them having it the entire year, students will have the opportunity to improvise, a key element from Dr. Emdin's text. STEM, STEAM, Make, Dream by Dr. Chris Emdin serves as our anchor text for 23-24 and beyond. This texts supports educators in "reimagining our collective relationship to STEM by presenting it as more accepting and accessible." Emdin continues , "...the book provides educators with tangible ways to honor culture, increase equity, and encourage curisoity."

ICSD Elementary Librarians working on implementing module kits

Thanks to an IPEI Connecting Classrooms Grant, kits are shared between libraries that focus on developing computational thinking skills in our youngest students.

The CS Collaborative is working towards expanding equitable CS learning opportunities K-12.

- Develop & refine curriculum (including K-5 Seasonal CS Activities)

- Foster Community connections to develop a robust & sustainable ecosystem

- Outreach & Awareness Building

- Professional Learning

Race After Technology, by Dr. Ruja Benjamin, is being used as an anchor text for CS expansion.

This text, distributed to CS Collective participants, gives educators a critical lens for how technology can inadvertently deepen social inequities. This text will help educators guide students in creating a more just technological future.
